Ensure Your Next Of Kin Can Access Your Devices

But is it necessary for the next of kin to have access to the account (I.e. Usernames, passwords, 2fa, etc)? Don't these sorts of places have protocols for when contacted by family of the deceased?

It's not strictly necessary, but it would surely make it a hell of a lot easier than needing to faff around providing death certificates etc., at probably an already very difficult time for them, particularly for things like utilities accounts which ideally need to keep ticking over as smoothly as possible.

For things relating to assets and money in the deceased name you should still use the official route and certificates/documentation as the protocols will be well established, they will deal with it frequently and leaves a nice paper trail you are doing it on behalf of them (essentially everything the executor would care about). In this case, just a list of places to contact (pension providers, banks, etc) and if you want to go the extra mile then account numbers too

Its incredibly useful for everything else that was "personal" to them that needs settling and doesn't have the above financial impact. I was lucky that my father was just generally a documentation person so while his death was unexpected at 66, it was incredibly easy to execute the estate and tidy everything else up.
