Right am looking to build a low power server and am trying to reuse as many existing parts as possible. Already have a socket 775 Mb so am looking for a cpu to go with it.

Now I have been told to look out for an EO stepping as these are more power efficient so can someone provide a list of all the EO stepping cpus available, also the ones to particuarly look out for.

regards,

Matt

Dual core

E8400
E8500
E8600

Quad Core

Q9550
Q9550S
Q9650

The Q9550S offers a lower TDP compared to the standard Q9550 thus making a power efficient chip

However I would say if your looking for a power efficient chip then any of the 45nm parts would be fine for a low power setup.

IMO you could also undervolt the chip by a fair amount while remaining at stock clocks

Thanx that is excellant.

Initially I was going to go down the route of a low power chip but then I thought I might as well ge a chip that can do 2 roles, low power when it's sat as a server then change the profile and it can be used for encoding dvd's etc, etc.

Matt

Why reboot into a different profile, if you have speedstep enabled it will drop the multi saving on power anyway if you pair one of the cheap processors the new E6500 would be a good option and pair that with one of the ATi HD 5450 cards to of load the HD to then your looking at a low power, efficient server/ HTPC with that won't run out of steam
