Hi guys
After obtaining the new Epic Gear mouse and gaming surfaces on Friday I decided it would be rude not to do a product review, as this is a relatively unknown product.
After grabbing a retail boxed Meduza Hybrid mouse. I have used this mouse extensively this weekend. I have tested the mouse on the following games.
So as you can see I did extensively test this out! Anyway onto the actual review.
The Box:
The packaging is great. It allows you to view the mouse behind a clear plastic insert which is shaped to the mouse, thus allowing you to feel the shape of the product prior to purchase (doesn't really make much difference to etail though lol) The packaging is sturdy (great for delivery) and the print on the box has a very extensive list of features and benefits. The design of the box is great, it is black with a reflective cat/panther type front fascia on the box, making the product look appealing.
Inside the box there is:
Instructions
Mouse
Driver Disk
Initial Setup:
Unboxing the mouse took just a few moments. The mouse is of course, USB, like every mouse available now. I plugged in the mouse and Windows detected the mouse straight away, the mouse lit up as it should, and Windows quickly installed the neccessary generic mouse drivers. The mouse worked straight away. Next up was the driver/software installation. The CD was installed and I noted that software is a whopping 6megabytes. The software installed very quickly. The software allows you to customise a big range of options and save profiles to your mouse.
Tracking Quality:
The quality of the mouse is very good, the feet are extremely smooth and the mouse doesn't suffer any judder in the usage I had from it. I used this on both the EpicGear gaming surface and my own QcK mouse pad from Steelseries and the tracking was spot on with both. The mouse has 3 tracking modes, Optical, Laser and Hybrid (combination of both), the native optical mode, and the native laser modes both track just how a high end laser of each type should. The laser mode is mega high precision whilst the optical offers the quality and feel of a great gaming sensor also. Myself I prefer optical mice as laser mice seen a little too "perfect" in the tracking itself. The Hybrid mode for me was by far the best with the smooth feeling of the optical sensor, but the precision of the laser sensor.
I ended up trying the mouse for an extended period in all 3 modes, personally I felt the HDST mode was by far the best.
Switching from mode to mode is simple, you just flip the mouse over and on the bottom is a small switch to allow you to swap the mode whilst the mouse is plugged in and on.
Sturdiness:
The build quality of the mouse feels great, the mouse feels just right, but one of the key issues is that some people will prefer heavy mice, and others prefer lighter mice. Epic Gear could have offered a weighting system to make the mouse more customisable.
Gaming:
Gaming for an extended period of time, was a delight, I enjoyed playing games for much of Saturday (and I told my wife it was to review a product for work, so she didn't complain - not that she does very often anyway) I will admit that whilst I'm not the best BF3 player in the world, my accuracy did seem to improve whilst using this mouse on Saturday. The software allows you to customise the DPI and acceleration to perfection too, which is good, you can change and edit the default profiles too, which are stored on the mouse, so if you don't like a bloated OS you can remove the software once you have confirmed the profiles and saved them to the mouse. This also allows you to plug your mouse into various PC's and have your settings ready to go.
Extended Use and Comfort:
The mouse is very ergonomic and comfy, the only downfall is that parts of the mouse is not rubberised, it is a shame as the rubberised finish gives a much nicer feel, and on the mouse where your thumbs rests you can feel the hardened plastic a bit. The mouse cable is excellent in quality with a great looking red/black braided cable which protects the internal wiring, and makes this product very hard wearing and long lasting.
In Summary:
Normally unknown branded gaming mice do seem to be a little rubbish in general, but using this mouse I was pleasantly surprised. Don't get me wrong, their are a couple of things which could have been done to finish off the product, but in general this is a very good product which does sit near the top of the tree in the gaming mouse area. If I have purchased this mouse I would have not been dissapointed at all. Especially if I was undecided between buying optical or laser.
I would rate this product 8.5/10, it lost points for the lack of weight adjustment and the mouse could have been 100% rubberised.
