Equal opportunities - blah blah blah

While I'm bumming around at the moment and to keep the Jobcentre happy, I decided to take a 6 week NHS Clinical Support course where I'll end up with a Level 3 certificate in pushing a wheelchair.
I arrived in the class this morning to be greeted by the United Nations but that didn't bother me.
What did bother me was that we did a Numeracy & Literacy test and 5 of them had Support Assistants with them :confused:
Because of equal opportunities everybody gets a chance at doing a job even if they can't talk English.
I got 100% in my Numeracy and 98% in my Literacy (I spelt hoping with an E) but looking round the rest of the class most of them were around 10%.
In the old days they would have showed you the door at that point but because of Equal Opportunities they will be able to sit it again and again and again with their own tutor who probably costs us the public about £20 a hour.

Now that is crazy! By all means I could understand giving them free English lessons, but providing a translator for someone to keep repeating a test they just don't have the skills to pass is stupidity.

If you cant speak english then you should not have a job in the UK working with the public.

I know when i go to Asda and get served on the till by someone whos english is **** i find it annoying, especially (sp?) when someone who can talk english properly could do it.

So you're saying people who arn't English or dumb shouldn't have a chance at the job?

Yes...

You wouldn't give someone who didn't know anything about human anatomy and biology a job as a surgeon since it's a basic requirement for the job, so would you trust someone who struggles with basic English and maths (because lets be honest, these tests are a piece of wee) to do the following (shamelessly stolen from the NHS careers website):

* making up chemical solutions
* using computers to analyse data
* responsibility for labelling and sorting of tissue samples
* disposal of chemical or biological waste
* maintaining stocks or consumable items
* phlebotomy (see below)

They shouldn't be given the job if they can't do it.

Just like people shouldn't get money for doing nothing, unless there is a valid reason why they can't work.

I don't think English people go to Asda anymore!

Everytime I go in there, which is rare as I hate the place, it is full of sodding foreigners...:rolleyes::mad:

Tesco is a bit more upmarket round here. A few still get through though..

If they cannot speak fluent English, then I don't think they should have a job in this country!

I wouldn't go that far, working abroad is great fun and if there was a blanket ban on anyone who couldn't speak fluently that would be very sad. All that's needed is some common sense. i.e. if the job is serving burgers then only basic English skills would be needed, if the job is as a sectary/doctor/police officer etc then obviously the person needs to be fluent in English.

I gotta agree, its a bit stupid tbh and a bit ott political correctness. If they cant do the job why are they there... but then again its just pushing a wheel chair isnt it? I mean :S "shut up and drive" or "shut up and push"...... :S

If I was to move and live in another country, I would make an effort to speak the local lingo. Now granted most of Johnny Foreigner does in this country, but for every one that can peak English, there are 3 who can't (except for swearing of course, the universal language! :) )

I like the way Australia does it, if you can't speak English, you can't live here.
Pity we are not ruled by Westminster any more :rolleyes:

Of course! I was referring to people who can't speak fluently but do try/speak the basics. It doesn't take long to learn basic English.

tesco loughborough is awful. the night manager is seikh (sp) so all all his staff (suprising....i dont think so) are from pakistan/india area. If they speak english fair enough, but they really shouldn't employ ones that a fresh off the boat and dont speak a word of english.
