At present I have a load of 2600 routers and an 1841,

I have 1 ADSL WIC, and 1 4 port ethernet switch WIC

For a lab should I still be considering serial interfaces?

or should I just go for ethernet?

Thanks for looking

It depends what you wanna lab up, most Cisco exams contain lots of serial stuff, all my CCIE stuff is packed with frame-relay etc, most of the CCNA/CCXP stuff you need to know lots about serial interfaces.

Most of it will be used for certification (hopefully) so I guess I should stock up on a few serial interfaces then.

Will a NM-8A/S work in a 2612?

NM-8A/S would be fine for serial stuff, or a frame-relay switch or whatever.

what cert are you planning on?

At the moment CCNA, but want to eventually move up to CCNP -> CCSP and possibly further so I want a reasonable set of equipment which is fairly expandable

You should be fine with 2600s 1841s etc

ebay is your friend to find bits and pieces for labs, you can get wic-1t's for about £20, extra memory etc for not much more. Especially as 2600s are now end of life and quite old, however they still support new IOS along with most protocols..

I know, I've maxed out the mem/flash on the 2600s to 64/16
The 1841 is runing with 256/128

All I'm after now are the interfaces

Incidentally the 2612s have a token ring port (I have to admit I've never used token ring, though I do understand the priciples)

Is it worth doing anything with the token ring interfaces (and what do I need to connect them as the only token ring systems I remember seeing were BNC and these are RJ45) if a 10Mb hub is sufficient I have a 24port one kicking about somewhere.

You won't need to know/do/think anything about token ring. It is a long gone technology, i've been working in networking for 6 years and the closest i've ever come to token ring is a pile of knackered kit in the corner of a building being knocked down :p
