Hiss, pop, then a load of smoke from my Powerbook G4 powerbrick, just disconnected everything and the wire close to the brick has melted!

I'm not under warranty but i'm slightly concerned here, can I get a replacement FOC, if I blag and talk nicely?

Ring Apple, there may have been a re-call for this particular batch if they had dodgy power bricks. They should replace it for you.

Even if it's out of warantee surely it must have been defective enough to catch fire. If it had destroyed your house you could have probably got compensation.

Phone them up, if they refuse to replace it, explain how you could have died and they will probably ask you to send it in for inspection.

I bet you'll get a new one.

Thanks guys. Will try give them a call first thing. Bought this off a mate at work and it's his 2nd adapter already. First just stopped charging completely!

My housemates 15" MBP has just had the same thing happen. but it burnt at the mag-safe end. I've told her to contact Apple to try and get it replaced or to buy another one and get them to refund it but at the moment she is quite content to steal mine.

Ouch, glad you were around and it didn't set your house on fire.

Apple should be ok, threaten them with litigation if not! :p

Just to update you chaps.

Kept waiting for an hour on the phone this morning.

Firstly got told, 'but it's not in warranty' So, i basically told him that I will not be leaving the line until i've been given there word for a new one.

All sorted in the end, was put through to a bloke higher up the ladder who sorted things for me and asked if I was ok etc etc.

New adapter will be in the post, just got to return this current one for my money back.

Result in the end but sweet jesus, if me house had been up in flames!!!

Well no company in the right mind will force you to go on a public relations exercise for product safety "Apple product catches fire!" .. sounds a bit like a certain battery manufacturer :D

Same happened to me. I got a new one sent out, didn't even need to ask. Was out of warrenty, but I'd read reports online of others having the same problem then receiving a new adaptor with a longer/stronger plastic sheath by the magsafe connector so I had a plan if necessary.

Apple never admitted to me that there was a problem with the original design, but it's obvious there was or they wouldn't have changed it ;)

They should replace it for her as they did me and if they don't, just ask her to question why they changed the design :)

A fair few years ago the PSU on one of my Dell laptops caught fire, fried the laptop and slightly burnt my gf at the time. Strangely enough after my rant to Dell they replaced the out of warranty laptop with a brand new one.. things going on fire is pretty bad PR for laptop manufacturers :)

Although saying that, I would imagine the Apple fanboys, of which there are several on here, would probably still support a Mac that went on fire.. "yeah, but you only need minor skin grafts and a new house.. I don't see what the problem is" ;)
