I turned on my PC today and the drive I use for storing files was not there. Thinking that was odd I checked the Disk Management console and it asked me if I want to intialise my disk

I've not done anything to it and it was working fine when I switched off last night. It's a 1Tb Samsung F1 on Vista x64 and theres no sign it's faulty.

Any ideas how I can resolve the issue?

Cheers

p.s. the last thing it was doing last night was installing Windows Updates. Could this have had an impact on things...

Now the only thing I would say is windows update. Go through your update log to see what updates was installed. I would be tepted to take it out ad put it into another pc too see what happens.

Storage these days is getting bigger and when problems like this occur it is dis-heartening to say the least that data, lots of it would be lost.

Yep, and the Samsung drive utility just gave the drive a clean bill of health. In short the drive appears to be fine, just the contents have disappeared since last night.

I'm afraid to do anything further without guidance in case I overwrite the contents which I know are there.

I had a similar issue once. Somehow i had converted a basic disk to dynamic and i couldn't find any way of converting back to basic without losing my data. All the data was there though. I had to hook up a spare drive and use getdataback to retrieve all the data onto the spare drive.

Thanks guys, I'm running a recovery utility now.

It found 1392 folders and 39,000 files within seconds so it was obviously able to read the contents in some form or another, but as it now is scanning the whole disk surface it will be a few hours before I know the final results.
