Currently trying to sort out a friends pc for him, it's picked up a bugger of a virus (obviously it was because of the kids)

Pretty much all the services can't be started, giving the error 5 message.
Can't copy/paste to remove files to external drive.
Can't run a scan with AVG (click the scan button, nothing happens, thing it's tied to the services)
Can't run a scan with Anti-malware, installer crashes due to corrupted file. (found the same problem on the malwarebytes forum, tried redownloading, etc)
For a while it had no task bar & no way or raising the task bar to alter it's settings. Even when set to not "auto hide", you could only see a single grey line at the bottom of the screen, showing in classic style as the themes service is stopped.
Nothing shows up in the taskbar (now that it's come back), even when i open open the ctrl panel and a couple of other windows, the task bar is empty.

Did an anti-malware scan with his drive in my machine and it picked up 4 inffected files, mostly tied to "my websearch" which although a problem, doesn't usually disable a machine to this extent.

Next step is to pull the drive, copy his files off and reinstall, which i really don't want to do on a sunday!

Is this ringing any bells for people?

Cheers.

That wants reinstalling. A reinstall would probably be quicker than trying to get rid of a nasty infection like that - and you'd be sure that all the malware was gone. If you try and fix it, you'll never be sure that there isn't some malware lurking somewhere stealing credit card numbers.

Yeah it's beyond the point of no return and needs a fresh install. Kids also need a standard account in future.
+1, in fact they all need standard accounts, leave the admin account for when doing admin stuff
And make sure you get antivirus installed and updated before copying any of his data back after the rebuild
