Error Code 0 - Compression?

Anyone know of a way to compress a video file to less than 4GB? Tried the built in compression, but didn't get it below 4GB

I can't format my external, as it's not just for the Mac, so that is out

The file is a .mkv and is 4.37GB.

I could just compress it in say MPEGStreamclip, but as it's 720p video content, i don't want to lose the video quality.

Any ideas?

Instead of compressing the file is it not possible to split the file in two?

Could do, but wouldn't that mean re-compressing the video?

Is there .7z or similar, for archive compression that i could then just expand when on the HDD?
