So i find out today that, having used component for like 4 months now, that due to "copywrite rules" my DVD's are not being upscaled to more than 480p!!

However if i used a VGA cable instead id get up to 1080p. WTF is that all about! Bloody crazy! Im getting a VGA cable tomorrow!

I don't think it's due to copywrite rules, a lot of normal DVD players can scale up to 1080i via componant without any bother, possibly a restriction/setting on the 360.

However blu-ray and HD-DVD both have the optional "don't show over X resolutions if using un protected outputs" flags, which will do exactly that if the disk uses them.

So the question now is did you in your mind believe you were watching a 1080p picture? Did you believe the picture quality was better even though it wasn't?

No source, but it is a well known fact.
The 360 upscales over VGA but cannot over Component.

My Toshiba HD-E1 is the same. It upscales over HDMI but doesn't over component. I think its something to do with that AACS protection lark.

VGA:

* HD DVD - 1080p resolution and all others
* DVD - Upscaled as high as 1080p resolution and all others
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future

Component:

* HD DVD - 1080i resolution maximum, limited by AACS
* DVD - Upscaled to 480p maximum, limited by CSS
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future

If you didn't notice for 4 months then does it really matter?

A DVD is native 480p or 576p.

In order for it to be displayed by an LCD monitor/tv it needs upscaling.

Either the XBOX 360 can do it for you or your TV can do it, doesn't make a huge amount of difference really.

I thought DVDs native resolution was 576i/25?

so in theory, if your DVDs weren't protected with CSS then it would happily upscale over component? Sounds like a simple problem to fix :D.

Depending on the quality of the TV really - some inbuilt scalers are better than others (to be honest I have never used my x360 as a dvd player anyway but I thought it was worth mentioning :D)

Im really confused about this whole thread. I use my 360 on a 42" LCD Screen (using the HD cable that came with the 360) and to play my DVD's I just use my old DVD Player. Are you saying if I use my 360 as the DVD player it will upscale my DVD's to 1080p?

This is the cable I use to connect to my HDtv

Does I need to be using either a 360 Digital VGA Cable or HDMI cable to get the 360 to upscale?

The whole thing baffles me.

I have mine connected via component and its amazing for games but crap for DVD's.
I asked the question on here and under advice bought a VGA cable.
Now the look of the games has faded and the picture is not as sharp , I havent tried it with a DVD because I cant plug the VGA audio lead anywhere on my TV.

Moral of the story? Stick with component and buy a seperate DVD player.

Echo.

Do you have a source for that?

I'm not being a ****, I've just not seen any official confirmation yet, just several dodgy sites saying it can, it can't etc.

I can prove it now.

I've just picked up a new TV that only allows an exact scan mode when there's a 1080 source.

I've just set my Elite over HDMI to 1080p and put on a DVD and the option has become available, ergo, upscaling to 1080.
