ES CPU for Laptop?

Well I'm bored and want to play with my laptop.. I'm thinking of upgrading the CPU but the only CPUs I can find are engineering samples!

I've currently got a T7300 in it and can find T7500, T7700 and T7800 CPUs but they all appear to be ES!

Is there any downside to getting one of these for my laptop? Or shall I just go for it?

I wonder where you find those ES cpu's, stores aren't supposed to sell them I think. Anyway here in The Netherlands I have no problem whatsoever finding T7x00 CPU's that aren't ES.
 
Tbh I don't think you will notice much if you upgrade from a T7300 to a T7500 and these laptop cpu's are pretty expensive still... Remember ES are engineering samples so they might not be as good as the final CPU product. Seems logical.

Well... I'd go for a T8xxx cpu if I'd upgrade yours.
 
I have found a T7700 with is 2.4 instead of 2GHz so would be a nice step up! That was the one I was planning on getting anyway..

Would a T8*** work in a T7*** Vostro laptop?

Are the 8 series a lot better than the 7?

Each CPU has its own identifier, S**** for Es's its Q***(*) that identifier if googled should give you a stepping. If its a released stepping, then its the same as the normal version of that stepping. If its pre release say an A1 then you may find that it has bugs, but the chances you will stumble across one is pretty remote.

As far as desktop processors go,
Some ES's clock well others dont, its just a lottery just like processors made during a certain week can be better/worse/cold bugged/not CB'd.
Its the same they are just produced earlier then the processors that are for sale publicly.
 
it wont take P8400 or P8600 cpu's it will only take T8100/T8300/T9300/T9500(the last one being the newest Penryn) and the T7*** series you mentioned. i think that is right, as others have said its not really that much of an improvement, i mean if your having to spend £50+ to get say 400Mhz extra.. even if you sold the one you have just now.
 
Hmm.. Can find a T9300 for not a lot, should be able to sell mine for a bit so it will work out at about £50 for an extra 500MHz and 2megs of cache! :)
 
I was going down this route with my Vaio, it had the newer Santa Rosa specs with a T7250 so it could take the new P series, decided it wasn’t worth the effort in the end, looked like a right job swapping them and voids the warranty.
