i cannot get my portable 500GB hard drive to be recognised by either my front or rear i/o panel esata ports

its in an akasa integral esata/usb2 caddy

infact neither my front 2 usb or esata points work quite right.. i have 2 front usb and esata ports

the only thing that works is plugging it in to 2 usbs at the back, but i loose the added speed of esata

i have achi mode enabled

eSATA is troublesome at best... if you didn't install the OS with AHCI enabled it will almost never work and sometimes you will have to have the device plugged in before starting the PC.

i wouldnt really say its troublesome at best

at best its the fastest way of connecting a External Hdd to your mobo

at the worst its just a few bios tweaks

yes i have rebooted, and at least from the back it is working.. but i cannot see it in the eject hardware in the task bar.. however the bog standard sata drives.. ie, OS, storage etc all appear 'ejectable'

so yes, recognizable at boot, but not plug and play..

what steps next?

thanks :)

Today I thought I'd actually get esata working as I couldn't be asked to open open one of the chassis and plug in a drive.

Installed the jmicron drivers from 'their' website - switched on ACHI in the BIOS for that controller only and it works like a charm. Hot swap,udma7 all working

um, ill try installing the drivers.. is it jmicron.com.. the website looks very cheap and i am unsure which drivers i require!!

Yep always get the drivers from the people who made your component, the motherboard manufacturer only puts them together for you.

ps What jmicron controller do you have on your board ?

Drivers here ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/

sorry, im unfamilar with a lot of the details of this area of hardware/software

i will try that

thanks, installing the driver seems to have worked, and my pc knowledge rows!

i now gotta figure out how to actually eject the drive so i can try hot swap.. its constantly in use according to the PC :/

also my ST9500420AS 7200 500GB seagate i salvaged from my laptop seems to be writing at full 90MB/s write rate on average :)

Just a thought, but do you have the ports connected to the mobo for them to work?

yes, annoyingly ts taking up precious esata ports on my mb, i may just end up using the back panel one as i think i will soon be using all 6 sata ports for internal storage

still trying to figure whats stopping it ejecting!!

i know where tha is lol, it just wont eject, says its in use, i cant find whats using it
