If I have a smartwatch that supports 4G via eSIM, does my mobile phone also need to support eSIM or can the two devices coexist with the phone using a traditional physical SIM card and the smartwatch using its eSIM?

Thanks

They're two separate devices, so it doesn't matter what type of SIM the phone is using. Treat the watch as another phone, just need to make sure your network supports eSIM.

Thanks, that's what I thought, was just checking as will need to move provider because current one (Sky) does not support eSIM

And to make it worse, not all carriers support all watches.

Yes, am finding it difficult to tell if a provider will support my watch. From what I can tell EE, Vodafone, 3,and O2 all support eSIM but am unable to get details if they support galaxywatch 4. I could also do with WiFi calling on my phone Galaxy S20 FE which adds extra complexity. Tried customer services but they are not helpful so far.

WiFi calling worked on EE but not Vodafone with my S20 FE 5G

I can confirm wifi calling working on EE(Have been with them for many years) using a Samsung galaxy s21 ultra. and several smartwatches from the Galaxy watch 46 LTE to my current one active 2 LTE(until my new galaxy watch 4 classic LTE arrives) So Esim works perfectly. My only gripe with EE is if you say have a normal sim and convert to an Esim or back from an Esim to a normal sim they charge you.
Yes, they are not the cheapest carrier around. but for me and the times, i have had to contact customer support they have been brilliant. They even messed up the trade-in for my s21 ultra. so let me keep my previous phone for free. Samsung galaxy s20 ultra. cannot praise them enough. In fact, all of my family use EE.
