Im studying a unit on my degree course called " The Troubles with youth"

im just about to start my first essay for this unit entitled " Why does imprisonment not work for young people" (or something similar)

im struggling to find things to put in it as its a 3000 word essay

so far im thinking:

History of prison
Borstals
Young offenders institutes- aims of, what they do, what goes on within them
Young peoples attitudes towards police
alternatives to imprisonment
youth justice- courts etc
The idea that youths can "grow out of" crime

can any1 think of anything else i may or could add into it. this is the first essay im struggling with so far this year and it probably the first one with the simplest title

thanks in advance

what's your course?

also

" The Troubles with youth"

One of the troubles with youths today is their inability to do their own work.

i didnt say i was unable to do my own work. i said i was struggling with content, you can see for yourself im trying!

more fool me for expecting some serious, helpful people to be on here

course is Criminology

i have 10 books from the library. and have used various government websites. i seem to be on a bit of a roll at the minute so shall see how much more i can get done tonight.

thanks to those that put in useful comments

to the others: way even bother posting? (thats a rhetorical question:rolleyes:)

Might want to introduce elements of youth subculture etc, and consider the reasons they end up becoming delinquent and become involved in crime - that element fundamental to making imprisonment 'work' for them in the first place.

Third year Police Studies student here. :)

ahhh thank you very much. thats the sort of thing i was looking for. i think that whether prison works or not depends on the environment they return to upon release. if they go straight back to where they were before its more than likely they will return to their old ways.

Wow that's a nice essay!

I'd include:

- Youth culture and influence
- Leniency of law
- Social aspects ie groups D and E more likely to offend (could probably fit this in culture and influence)
- No provision in prison or punishment that makes them reflect on their crime

You must have Uni resources online, read up on some journals, check some library books. This is the only way to expand ideas!

Thanks i think i definately have my essay now. now for making all that fit into my word count. thanks for the ideas guys i really appreciate it!
