Just wondering what various free or cheap applications people use specifically for web development, programming and graphics related things. Might make a useful thread as every other day we have someone ask what to use instead of Notepad or what FTP Client etc. :)

Personally, I use this little lot for various things:

FireFTP - FTP Client for Firefox

Bloodshed Dev C++ - Free C++ IDE

Colourificator - Great tool if you want to know the colour code for a colour you like

Crimson Editor - Free Text Editor with Syntax Highlighting for HTML, CSS and PHP amongst other languages.

Irfanview - Free image editor with loads of plug ins available for it.

Just a reminder, I meant tools specific to this part of the forums. Not stuff that's just useful for the regular user of PCs as that would be of more use in the Windows part of the forums :)

To add my favourite tools to the list -

Cross-platform:
SciTE - minimalist and efficient text editor with a great deal of customisation. Not Java-based like some cross-platform editors.
Web Developer Extension for Firefox. I don't know what I'd do without it - it's all I really need.
The Gimp - open-source Photoshop alternative. While it's not quite as good, it's very close.
InkScape - vector graphics program. Looks basic on the surface, but very capable program.

For Windows:
FileZilla - My FTP client of choice. Does what you'd expect.
PuTTY/PSCP - Perfect if you need to use SSH and SCP on Windows.

Aside from Photoshop/Illustrator when I get the chance, that's all I ever really use for webdev :).
 
I think the list needs pruning as well. There are some absolutely rubbish tools in that list . . *cough* blueJ *cough*
 
ACDSee is a pretty decent picture viewer, not free sadly ($50 - inexpensive?) but i use it at work and i'd reccommend it to anyone.

I wasn't born yesterday and the fact your reply was 11 minutes after I first posted proved it didn't take you 10hrs to compile besides the fact it did look quite obviously cut and pasted ;)

Good list, I use all of those with the exception of InkScape - and I'm lucky enough to have Photoshop at work so rarely use GIMP. The Web Dev extension is now a must have (although I'm sure he moved 'Outline > Block level elements') :mad:

I would also add the following:

OSX VNC - VNC Server for OSX, running on a Mac mini - easy way to test websites in Safari.
TightVNC - Windows client for the above.
phpMyAdmin - Web based MySQL administration tool.

It's a pretty decent piece of software for organising photo collections and creating slideshows, but only really offers simple, albeit well implemented, image manipulation - colour balance, b&w, sharpening etc. Worth having, but don't expect to be able to create anything new with it :).
