esxi 5.1 automated shutdown - how to do it from within the host? It doesn't seem to have cron. My pc wont be on when I want to schedule microserver (esxi host) shutdown so scripted ssh/esxi/vim-cmd solutions are not suitable.

yes, just the one atm - running xpenology/dsm.

I want to shut down the xpenology box politely so not sure how compatible that is with xpenology ssh-ing to the esxi host and telling it to shut down.

You can tell ESXI to automatically power off the VMs when it's told to shutdown and if you have vmware tools on your guests you can do it gracefully instead of just pulling the plug.

In vSphere client: Configuration -> Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown -> Properties

I'd be surprised if you could install vmware tools onto Xpenology. Nice if you could though.

I don't think so either - I know that it isn't installed currently, anyway. I'm using the advanced power manager synology community app to handle the power down of the xpenology box.

The link I gave in OP that shows how to modify an rc.local file so that a cron entry is always written when esxi starts up seems to be working ok.
