Looking at a hex xeon @3ghz on a Asus P6T X58, I was going to stick in 5 or 6 SSD, but I noticed it's not got sata 3,

Now I'm thinking I'd be better off getting a newer i7 quad (home grade not xeon), which looses 2 cores but gains a few 100mhz sata3 and newer architecture

I have a budget of about 170 for a mobo and cpu

Anyone have any toughts?

I have a I7 950 which has sata 3 ports on. you can also get the xeons to work on the x58 boards

what you have to remember is with most of the x58 boards they have 3rd party marvel controllers which cannot reach the full speeds of the SSDs.

read and write speeds on my x58 board using sata 3 is 410mb read and 250mb write.

I use my sata 2 ports for my SSD and get a bit higher write speeds of 280mb read and 280 write.

what is the use of it going to be?

people are not aware of the issues with the marvel controllers, I saw sata 3 ports and thought that it would be fine but due to having a 3rd party controller the speeds are not accessible. I didn't know this till I got my SSD and tried it myself but looking online on google loads of people have the same issue.

which ever system you go for make sure the board can handle full sata 3 speeds.
