Has anyone used these things? Im thinking about relocating my PC to another room, but the VM cable box and model would have to also be shifted unless I extend some ethernet across the house or something.

Are they reliable? Do you get decent speeds out of them or are they no better than using wireless for example.
Thanks folks.

FYI Im on 50mbit cable (VM).

ive got 4 of these running at the moment.
one is my daughters room, one in my sons room, one in the living room for the laptop ( thats used in the kitchen and outside too ) and the other is connected to the printer in the hallway.

much better than wireless, no drop in speeds, no dropouts in connection.....they just work ;)

Hmm thanks!

Do you think I would get my full 50mbit over these plugs?
And I presume there is some kind of switch version of these plugs so you can plug more thnings across the house?

hi, i bought the netgear xe104 devices as a kit, got them for half price from a competitor. they are only 85mb, but they do have a 4-port switch built into them. haven't had any issues at all with them, although i haven't 'properly' speed tested them so can't comment on you getting your full 50 meg through them. will run a few tests when i get in tonight if it helps. obviously the built in switches aren't going to be of the highest quality and also ultimately it's going to come down to the condition of your electrical wiring too i guess. i used some of these units in a previous house and didn't get on very well with them at all. i reckon there were 3 generations of cabling in that house though, so that could have been why!!!

Ah ok thanks for the info. Yes some tests would be fantastic if you would not mind!

Don't work too well in my house but it is a 60's detached with some aluminium wiring!! I've not had great success with them in other houses either, still can't beat a b.o.w.

Andi.

i'm on 50mbit broadband and have some (well know etailer) Value 200mb Homeplugs and they are excellent.

Our house was rewired within the last 5 years though but i'm in a seperate room from the VM modem/router and getting connection speeds of 197mbps so easily getting my full 50mb speeds.

Cheers Andi.
My house is late 80s/early 90s I think.
Should be ok I think?

EDIT: Ooh cheers Magicrounadbout! Thats good to know! Is that a utility that comes with the powerplugs?

Ok I decided that since I have a 50mbit connection and not wanting to run the risk of slower speeds, I opted for the Belkin Gigabit HD Homeplug affairs.

I wish I hadnt. But to be fair Im not sure if this is a specific model problem, or whether I would experience similar performance with other brands/speeds.

So I have one of these 1Gbps plugs next to my 50Mbit cable modem, the other in the other room next to my PC connected to a router, i.e. using these to propagate my next connection...

And the best speed I get off the net is a extremly poor 10Mbit.
1000Mbit... only yielding 10Mbit. Very dissapointed and thusly, sent back under DSR.

Hmm, I've got those same Value ones from the same etailer.

You got the software working with Win7?

I tried a couple of times and it would not detect the plug connected at all. Atm they're just all plugged in and working on default settings.

I tried the belkin 100MB version in my house.. Its a fairly new build, about 10 years old and TBH, didn't work for me either. I got lots of drop offs and it was just a nightmare, wireless worked better for me.

Think they are very hit n miss if you ask me.
