Ethernet bandwidth and distance

Hi,

Due to problems with wireless range and the price of better dedicated wireless kit, i am thinking about running a long ethernet cable from the router upstairs through the loft/celing and into a bedroom. This will probably need an ethernet cable that is 20-30m in length. This may be a stupid question, but will using a very long ethernet cable reduce its bandwidth significantly and will there be a lot of interference on a long cable from power lines in the walls/celing etc?

No, ethernet is good for full speed to it's maximum length (105m as I recall). Just use shielded cable and it'll be fine...

+1 Ethernet is fine at those lengths. Ive had a cable running into my basement -> stairs -> around the inside of the stairs up to 2nd floor -> around a whole room to my pc, never had a problem with it, must be a good 30m+

its spot on at that length, got 20-30metre wires all through floorboards etc in house to bedrooms from loft.

There was a very good guide posted on here a while back with simple steps on how to best go about laying ethernet cable. Simple things like making sure you don't lay the cable parallel to power cabling etc. I can't find it though.

Great stuff was thinking of posting a thread about this I'm getting my double garage/shed/dumping ground and was left with the dielma of maybe having to try and go wireless but its nearly 35m from my house to the garage. I dont suppose burying the cable (protected by plastic shielding) will do it any harm?

My only advice is to lay two cables if you can, one as a backup.
Better to have the backup and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Yeah I was thinking of maybe doing something like that. At least then I can get all my stuff up and running in the garage/shed and the missus wont be moaning about cables everywhere

I would lay 2 as well. Means If you decide to put something else that requires it in, you dont need to buy another switch. But if the first cable corrodes and dies and the second one is next to it . . . .

Cheers guys, thanks for the replies. Thanks to the advice, i will think about laying two, and its good to know that it'll be fine for my needs. I hate to say it but its not quite as adventurous as slamming holes through the ceiling cos theres already some holes leading into the loft, but im sure finding them will prove to be near impossible!

Tie a piece of string to the cable.
Then if needs be you can use the string to pull more cable through.

Obviously you have to make sure there is always a piece of string, so if you pull it through tie another piece to the end first.
