Ethernet cable works direct, but not with switch?

Title pretty much says it all. I've got a load of ethernet cables, which when plugged directly from our BT Home Hub (read: sub-par router) to a laptop or PS3 provide uninterrupted internet. However, when using a switch none of the cables work. I've tried two switches, (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-051-TP&groupid=46&catid=2316&subcat=) and (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-210-NG&groupid=46&catid=2316&subcat=) and whilst LEDs might occasionally flicker there's largely nothing occurring. Besides trying two switches, I've also tried half a dozen known to be good cables. Any ideas?

power off the devices, plug cables in, power everything back up.. might be a stuck arp on the homehub or dhcp issue.
