To receive my internet I have an ethernet outlet shown below:

Sometimes my friends come round to my flat with their laptop and would also like internet. Is there such thing as a ethernet splitter for this or do I need an ethernet switch?

(the left outlet is for telephone and not internet)

Thanks :)

Small 4 port switch would do the job. Run from the socket to the switch's input. Then run another eternet cable from the switch to each pc.

You need to be very careful as a switch might not be appropriate. What type of connection is it and who is it supplied by?

Where do you live?
Did you have to register your laptop?

This. Some places only allow one device per resident. You may have to buy a router instead so the only MAC address the landlord will see is the router, and any other deivces connected to it will be hidden.

I'm not sure, all I know is that I am using a cat5e cable to my laptop.

In that case you will probably need a router. Might need to spoof the laptops MAC.

Did you literally just plug and go? No registration required?
