Hi everyone hope you are all well,

Networking really isn't my strong suit so always like to check in and get advise here rather than winging it.

The room i spend most time in has pretty poor wifi signal so i have a Cat5 cable running into here that i plug into my laptop. I have been running connectify on the laptop to use it as a hotspot for my mobile phone. Whilst this works well, it would be much nicer to have a decent wifi signal in here instead. I think what im looking for is something that i can plug the existing Ethernet cable into that can then provide a wireless signal to my phone + laptop. If it's not possible to share this single line between the two then that's okay, i would just connect the laptop to it and continue to run connectify.

I will still be playing a few games where a stable network connection is required so that's something id like to keep in mind with this.

Would this be a good solution? what would you guys suggest hardware wise ?

Cheers

Harry

The device you are looking for is called an Access Point. Unify would be the brand most recommended in here but they're not the cheapest. If you've got any old wireless routers knocking about, most of them can be used as APs.

Thanks for the information @neodude just to confirm, is the brand Unify or is it Ubiquiti and the Unify product line of theirs? Currently looking at the ubiquiti UniFi AP AC Lite.

Aye that is a little more expensive not quite sure im happy to pay that much. I also really am not interested in ceiling mounting something, it's a really small room and would like to place it onto a desk that sits about 2ft to the left of my systems main location, and about 3ft from an alternate use place.

Well i have just got around to setting this up.

( dumb me thought i would record the system side setup with afterburner/ forgot i had it set to the lowest bitrate due to only wanting audio for somthing the otherday. ) Can't for the life of me remember what the password was to log into the unifi control panel ¬¬ as it was just a random array of digits. I told it to recover via email but no email comes through. I hope i can sort this out as would like access to the control panel. Happily however, i do have access to the internet via wifi and the ping / speed are identical.
