Got a spare usb hd here which isn't used much and I'm curious if (and I know a driveless nas would be better :p)it's possible to use a female usb/ethernet adapter to connect it to a lan and work as a budget nas? I can't imagine plugging a hd directly into a lan would be effective, but for arguments sake, is it workable in any way?

Sort of. You can't just convert the socket, but you can use a little box of tricks such as Sharkoon's Lanport to hook a USB HDD straight up to your network.
