Hi Folks :D

Sorry if this is a little thick, but i'm not too well up on this So. . . . .

To cut a long story short, I need a wifi adapter that uses ethernet not usb ?

is it possible to use some sort of router or access point as an adapter instead of using the normal pci or usb ?

Any advise would be great thanks in advance

I'm not exactly sure what you mean there, as you've mixed up some of the terms :p

Do you want to run a cable to your router instead of using wireless?

Wireless Ethernet adapter, not seen one in a while though.

Just buy a PCI one if you have a free slot as their a lot! cheaper and a free plug.

What I mean is. . .

Just like you would use a usb wireless adapter!

I simply want to do the same thing but instead of it plugging in the usb port I want it to plug in the ethernet port.

I have not seen any that will do this, And thats why im asking will an access point or router act like a normal usb adapter ?

Hope this is a bit clearer

Is it not possible in your situation to use homeplugs ? This would give you ethernet connect either end and faster speeds than wireless. Also much easier to source the devices than a ethernet to wifi. I am not sure if you can use a wireless repeater in such a way to be honest, hopefully someone who is more clued up on networking can comment.

Hello all & thanks fothe replies.

Cant use Home plugs as its two different mains rings.

Basicly I connect to my brothers wireless network who lives close by
using a usb adapter, although I have to go to a third floor to do this.

Using something like an access point or router would allow me to leave it on the third floor and run an ethernet cable to the first floor, would'nt like to start trying to use that lenth of usb lead.

I understand a wifi repeater might do, but if im going to buy something, I would prefere to not bother with the usb adapter I already have.

You would think some of the access points or routers would have a mode to use like this ??

Cheers

An old thread I know!!

found my solution in the form of...... wrt54g with dd-wrt firmware

You can buy them, they are called Wireless Ethernet Bridges. I have a D-Link DWL-G810, but they are not very common. (I'm assuming this is the sort of thing you are referring to, if I have read your messages right)
