Ethernet wiring

Hey guys,

I have just replaced a connector on one of my Cat5e ethernet cables. As I am a novice at this I have just realised that since pushing the wires into the connector two of the wires have switched around. I have also crimped the connector on.

The wires that are round the wrong way are the white-blue/blue. However I believe that these are actually only used if using 1000Base-T (Gigabit ethernet) data rates. I am only using a ISP router so does this mean it will not matter?

Many thanks.

Not sure if I'd like to have an incorrectly wired connector in use in my network, even if it is an unused pair. I've never connected an incorrectly wired 8P8C connector to a router before but I used to have one with just the 2 pairs with an old USB ADSL modem and that seemed to work fine, until I replaced it with a 4 pair.

What's the biggie about lopping the connector off and re-terminating?

Hello and thanks for the response. Nothing really but just didn't see any point in replacing it if it was going to work on 100Base-TX. But anyway from what you have said it will be fine and it's pretty much up to me whether I am happy with it or not. So I might change it at some point just for peace of mind :P

Thanks very much for the help :)

I would recrimp, purely because you probably will forget this in a few weeks, and then later on its going to confuse you when you try to use it on a future network.

What about the other end? If you've not crimped it yet you could just make sure you switch them around in the same way and it'll work as if nothing's wrong.
