This is very depressing news indeed.

It's a real contrast to the political narrative about Kosovo, where local self-determunation of a regional ethnic minority was supported by everyone from NATO to the EU.

As a famous man once said "who remembers the Armenians?"

When thinking of famous Armenians the first name that pops into my head is Serj Tankian lead singer of System of a Down.

From what I remember Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognised as a part of Azerbaijan but given the Armenians history I'm not surprised by how quickly they have fled the region.

Nagorno Karabakh was ceded to Azerbaijan by the Soviet Union, despite being 90% Armenian.

That's very similar to the population split in Kosovo, which was undisputably part of a sovereign state (Serbia).

As I said, there is a strikingly different approach in those two examples.

Does anyone actually care about upsetting Turkey?

Regarding Russia afaik they were assigned to peacekeeping duties there. Russia seem to flip flop on the support for either Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Yes, they do. Turkey has everyone over a barrel at the moment. Yesterday's antics in Syria show that they are able and willing to project force outside their boundaries.

Russia didn't support Armenia as the government has been making pro-western noises recently. Unfortunately for Armenia, their gamble didn't get them any Western support either. And here we are.
