Here is a review I been meaning to post here for a while now but always became sidetracked.
The reviewer is a member of an ET clan and has competed in the TWL, I am sure he played RtCW too.
Hopefully I have edited all the swearies out but if not then, I apologise.
ETQW.... The game was set up to have 12v12, but, they had only 8 slots available to the general public to sit down and play. thew other 4on each side were behind closed doors and just playing in order to keep the game moving along. I played on the GDF side.
The wait I encountered was approximately 20 minutes(not bad at all) and the last 5 minutes in that duration was a guide to help players. THey had an introductory DVD set-up to inform players of how the map and game was supposed to be played/completed. <---Very useful.
When I finally sat down to play, I tried to re-configure the cfg. , unfortunately, the demo configuration was locked and I believe it would be set-up the same way ET's cfg. would be configured originally. <---that sucked.
I got stuck using WASD for movement and all that horse$$$$.
The setting is the Skrogg vs. GDF in the yr 2065. Skrogg being the aliens invading the Earth and the GDF being the (allies) protectors of earth.
The fisrt map however, the Skrogg have already landed and started to set-up an established base within this imparticular map.
Within the map, there are 4 capturable zones that the GDF are trying to infiltrate into, each with an objective to complete in-order to gain ground.
Once the area is obtain, the GDF start spawning there(or wherever selected within the limbo map).
Objective 1 is to escort a tank with a high-explosive missle across a contructable bridge (reminded me of fuel dump..heh).
In order to do that, the vehicle needs to be repaired by an engy and escorted by whomever. The Bridge needs to be constructed by an engy and also reinforced by an engy. Yes, THey were build boxes and needed to be built twice. I did that in my playing time but had no back-up....
I kept getting owned on the reinforcing of the bridge. The GDF finally helped and we got the tank across.
From this point, the GDF need to escort the tank through a tunnel. The tunnel had a doorway about halfway through. THis is one of the GDF exits from there spawn. THey also have other available exits within a run down garage/storage house thats connected to the tunnel.
It took some time, but the GDF were again able to push through the tunnel. At this point I had switched to medic upon realizing there were no medics and a bunch of GDF screaming medic. Playing medic was pretty fun and pretty much the same as RCTW and ET. I was able to make revives on the run. RUnning up to an ungibbed body with the surge paddles in both hands and stabbing their chest to revive them, pretty damb cool.
The Second area had been obtained and the Tank was parked with the missle reay to go. However, you couldnt launch it. That where the third area came into play. The Third area had Some sort of shied generator, around another generator of some sort. To get there, There was a bridge to cross or several pathes leading into water, with the ability to go through the water mass on foot and come up a hill to the other side.
The Shield generator was encased within large concrete wall barriers. There were several ways to enter, with the bridge exit being the main entry point. From there, a Covert ops is needed to stand next to the shield generator and "HACK" into the machine, in-order to drop the defenses. Once the defenses are down, The LArge missle is launced from accros the river. THe missle destroys the other generator and a lot of
land surrounding it including part of a nearby building. HEres the last stage.
The last stage is more of a gun fight, going into some sort warehouse or industrial building. There are several flights of stairs and levels that need to be worked through in-order to get to the bottom level. At the bottom level, there is some sort of reactor that the Skrogg have in place and that needs to be destroyed. In order to detroy it though, you need another high explosive, only one of which the Soldier class carries now. <--I thought that was interesting. I didnt see it take place but learned about that during an hour presentation the following day.
With that completed, the GDF had completed all objectives and won the map. The GDF are allotted a total of 20 minutes to complete the map successfully.
So, what with all these vehicles ? Well, The GDF have ATVs /w machine guns, A tank with a canon and side-gunner areas for other players<---I believe, also to helicopters <---- not sure if they take passengers but I'd put my money on it , and some sort of a 6 wheeled armored SUV. I believe all the land vehicles are repairable by an engineer. Also, If your an engineer and hop in the vehicle, the vehicle repairs itself while your on the move <---- kinda like a medics health in ET.
The SUV is also amphibeous, yes people, you can take it into the water like a jetski! <---$$$$ing saweet !!!!
Skrogg vehicle included to hovering/Jet vehicles that were called "hornets" and they looked pretty badass. they also have a large walking robotic vehicle called "hercules". They also had an SUV type and ATV type vehicle, both of which I didnt get a great look at. All their vehicles looked pretty damb cool, all in all.
Also, Now the engineer has capabilities to set up anti-infantry/anti-land vehicle/anti-air support turrets to help keep the pressure off. These turrets that are place also have their own animation, being a chopper drops it out of the sky and lands where you placed it. Turrets also have to be place in regulated areas. <---not completey sure where.
As with this animation, the same goes for Field Ops. Field Ops are still able to call Airstrikes and Artillery. However, The Artillery is only available once an Artillery gun has been placed. After selecting a placement spot for the Gun, theres a large (3) perpelar (<--bad spelling) chopper that comes flying in and drops it down to its destination. Upon firing the gun, the gun actually fires with animation.
Airstrikes are available from the begining and they to have an animation. Now you actually see Jets go flying by /w rockets being launched down into the ground where the smoke can was lying. <---that was sweet.
As for the map, its actually 32,000 by 32,000 pixels. This is 1 sq. mile.
The terrain of the map is also just (1) texture. Yes, 1 texture. It is called a mega texture and is approximately 6 GB in file size before compression. It then is knocked to approxiamtely 500-600 Mb.
It looked great, and the water in the river was very impressive as well.
The physics were incredible, the 6 wheeled SUV had the cabability to have 1 tire at a time to be shot out. with the ability to have an angineer walk up and start reconstructing and watch the wheels magically appear back on the vehicle. The other cool thing was, there were other pieces on the vehicle that could be shot off individually, piece by piece.
Also, The engine now recognizes all aspect off a player when carrying weapons. When you sprint, you cannot shoot. <---I didnt like that. And also, you run slower with a two-handed weapon out versus a one handed weapon, handgun/knife/grenade. (grenades still can be primed*sidenote)
The animation all go with whatever weapon you are carrying as well, whether it be a hand gun, smg, or a panzer. Each animation is different when you are changing weaponary.
The gameplay itself. Pretty fun. Lots to do. Between the vehicles weapons and objectives, there was a lot to do. It didnt feel like ET, but it was good. Movement and targeting were pretty good and didnt feel like Quake 4. It was different yet not disappointing at all. <---again, I wasnt playing with my normal config, so everything felt weird and out of place.
My opinion.... Not that anyof you care Wink
I liked it and will be purchasing it for sure. I was impressed with all the changes and new stuff added. I enjoyed that theyve made all classes an important factor in completeing objectives. The shooting was pretty good from my point of view, When I got into gun fights, I didnt get owned and also held my own. They added some new infantry weapons to some or most classes, again I didnt see everything. I totally enjoyed the revives, yes IVY, you'll like it. The vehicles were pretty cool, I only had an opportunity to ride the ATV and SUV, both of which were a lot of fun.
The game had action in almost every instance and kept you on your toes without a doubt.
I think that about wraps it up. There did say they will-be/working-on a playable DEMO for the public. No other details were declosed on that matter. I hope this best describes the game and my opinion of it.
The game has a lot of potential and I hope everyone now knows what I meant by the game being more team oriented. (X, my comparison was to ET and making all classes have some sort of an objective)
If anyone has any questions, post them and I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge. I only played once and I also sat through an hour presentaion by (2) of the developers.
I give it 8 out of 10
