Finally started my build last night, completely new to the whole build side of things so it took me a while and frustrating at times but I got it all together although cables were quite messy and was nervous as to weather it would work.

Switched it on and ooooosh it works, although I only managed to spend minimal time actually checking everything properly the only issue I had at the momen was that the USB.3 ports on the motherboard seemed as though they kept cutting off, because I had to put my mouse and keyboard into the USB.2 ports and it worked fine, but gonna check it out later anyway.

Anyway I wanted to ask you guys what's the first things I should be doing regarding updates, drivers etc etc?

Specs below

Coolermaster kc 430
Western digital 500gb oem
Patriot viper 3 black mamba 2x4gb
Amd fx 6300
Asus 970 Evo motherboard
Coolermaster hyper 412 Evo
His 7950 iceq boost 3gb
Ocz 550w 80plus bronze zs series
Windows 8

I think that's everything

Thank you for any help

Looks nice. :D

Just make sure you have the lasest GPU drivers (you should have anyway).

Get some temp software downloaded (CPU-Z, Core Temp, HW monitor) and Get a GPU monitoring tool (afterburner or EVGA Presicon)

THen look up some overclocking guides. :D

head to the Asus webpage for your mobo. download the drivers from there. the disks supplied will have out of date drivers on them.

if you want to oc, get occt. this monitors temps, voltages etc etc as well as stress testing. handy all in one bit of software. to oc the GPU MSI afterburner is good. it can put a GUI up in game showing temps, vram use etc etc you can set custom fan speeds and even record gameplay.

enjoy the new rig bud.....welcome to the builders club :)

Thank you for all the feedback

Another thing i forgot to ask is I got a little speaker with the motherboard but I couldn't figure out where it plugs into?

It is likely the one that plugs onto where the case switches and reset cables are on the mobo - front panel it is usually called, there is a 4 pin header there for an internal speaker for system beeps when booting.Look in your manual to check.

Me personally..
  • Update windows(as many updates as available)
  • Defrag
  • Install latest drivers for mobo(download from manufacturers website), chipset, usb, whatever is necessary for the given board.
  • Graphics Drivers
  • Defrag
  • Browser + Necessary additions(flash, etc..)
  • Codec Pack + Media Player of choice
  • Defrag
  • Everything else
  • ....sometime later......Defrag
First and second are interchangeable, i just tend to do whichever happens first.... (ie. the update window pops up, or i have the download folder open ready with all the drivers). I don't think either being first will make any measurable difference, i just personally feel having the OS and updates bunched together(on the HDD) first makes the most sense, followed by drivers.

Ok so I've updated windows updates, updated the graphics card through amd website
Not sure how to do bios and motherboard because when I go onto asus website theirs quite a lot of different options and I'm not sure what ones I've got to download any ideas?
It's a asus 970x Evo R.2

After this I'm gonna defrag, what's the best way about doing this, use the defrag on the system or download a separate software?

Well done thats encouraging, my parts come monday, similar build gigabyte board, and ive never built before so nice to hear of a success.
