"London (England) - In an effort to scale back the prohibitive cost of the PS3, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) is removing a couple features for the official launch next month. Hardware cut-backs will result in the removal of motion sensitive technology and will limit the backward compatibility of the system.

According to a press release issued today, the PS3 model that will be used for the launch in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia, will be backward compatible with a "broad range of original PlayStation (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation 2 (PS2) titles."

The PS3 launch, which was originally planned to be worldwide, was pushed back for regions that use PAL encoding. The US and Japan use a different format known as NTSC.

In the NTSC versions, which debuted last November, it was reported that there was essentially a PS2 embedded into every PS3 console to maximize the compatibility with back-system titles. SCEE says it will continue to update the firmware for PAL consoles to add compatibility with PS2 titles. This is similar to what Microsoft has been doing with the compatibility of Xbox games on the Xbox 360.

The debut of the PS3 in PAL regions is scheduled for March 23. The price for most of the area is about 599 euros ($788)."

Hands up if you hate Sony even more if this is true now?

surely motion sensiitivity is the core of the six axis controller?

Already another post about backwards compatability - I personally am gutted (especially if GT4 doesnt work out of the box) and think its wrong of Sony to do this just in Europe - but I cant see how they can cut the whole of motion sensitive stuff

There is nothing in that article or anywhere else about cutting the motion sensing apart from the first line, and they don't even elaborate on it in the article, so it looks to be a mistake.

all the details on the official Playstation 3 website still state motion sensing so I would take that as being true.

I saw on the IGN site on friday that at first there was a statment about the Euro PS3 having no motion sensing. This was found to be an error and IGN added a statment saying that it was a false report and Sony never said this. I guess some sites kept the orignal erroneous statment up long enough for the rumour mill to get into full swing. Just looked on the IGN site now and it doesnt mention the sixaxis bit anymore.

I'm above the age of 12 so I never 'hated' Sony in the first place...

And I expect the whole article is incorrect. I'll believe it when there are more believable sources, like Sony themselves.

I thought it was removing the emotion engine and Graphics Synthesiser chips (basicaly a PS2) from the PS3 which gave it the wide range of PS2 game compatibility, and will now just depend on software emulation of the PS2 games like the 360 does

Looks like a rumour may have been spread due to a typo ? :D

Looks like the Pal regions are getting shafted once again by sony
