if you're gonna be using it a lot, then Vodafone do the 3G data card, on the data travel tariff you get 1gb of usage a month within the UK (and thats actually quite a lot i've found!) and 100mb abroad in vodafone preferred networks. £111 a month tho
It's only for my parents, they're travelling accross France & Spain next month, and I was going to buy them a laptop - but not if thats how much it cost's to access the net!
GPRS would probably be fine, they wouldn't want to use it a lot, so the speed isn't too much of an importance.
you get charged per megabyte so not really any difference if you go for 3g or GPRS, you can of course try a pay as you go sim in a 3g data card, however it works out something like £7 a megabyte. You're best off getting them to use Wi-Fi hotspots.
