EV general discussion

I doubt i would be able to buy an electric vehicle with the measly £10k budget i have - I assume the people of this forum will say :)

not that i want to switch to electric anyway yet
i just watched this video.
Depressing for me given we have replaced both our cars with EVs in the last 12 months and paid much more..... but possibly good for you. (bear in mind these are all 1 year old 10k on clock)

Dont give up on the video right away, they are not all prestige cars...... there really are some proper nice cars in the £13k to £20k bracket and thats only 12 months old.... Look to 3 years and your £10k may not be far off the mark.

are you sure this is the case? i thought all centre parcs had huge banks of EV charging.... i have only seen the ones at Elvedon with my own eyes but was under the impression all sites had been updated.
Unless they have put a load in recently. Was there last July. Only 2 chargers.

It’s pod point operated. I think you need the app and i couldn’t get mobile to work at the spot where the chargers were.

There are some crazy bargains to be had out there. I took the plunge when I realised I could get a one year old Zoe for 46% of new list price, that's some hefty depreciation in one year for a car with 1 owner and less thank 5k miles on the clock. This was bought from a main dealer so had a dealer stamp for year 1 service and also remainder of the warranty.

I expect it may continue to depreciate a bit in year 2 and 3 but you wouldn't be able to buy a petrol corsa at that age for that price with a similar level of spec.

Found the Centre Parcs short I saw a few weeks ago, but not sure if that's all of them in the UK though. It should be like that for all hotels, maybe one day. Good EV channel btw, when he made his second hand eNiro purchase recently I realised I can afford an EV now!

Whinfell Forest has a new bit in the carpark with a load of chargers as well.

I have to do a @jpaul and do a post and run so here comes an opinion to go with it. I've made a few posts recently about some of the used bargains out there at the moment, I just finally got round to watching this video and I didn't realise it was this 'good' in the used market at the moment.

For the too long didn't watch, here are the highlights. These prices are all 'trade values' for a 1 year old car with 10k on the clock (so barley run in) with a % drop compared to trading in the same 1 year old car 12 months ago. You'd have thought that Tesla would occupy slots 1 and 2 given how much owners seem to go on about it....

10. Jag I-Pace - £30,200 down -37.6%
9. Lexus UX300e - £20,900 -37.8%
8. Merc EQA - £27,375 -37.8%
7. Hyundai Kona - £17,558 -37.9%
6. Vauxhall Corsa - £13,800 -38.3%
5. Merc EQC - £32,575 -38.5%
4. Mazda MX-30 - £13,700 -38.5%
3. DS DS3 Crossback - £14,990 -38.6%
2. VW e-Up £12,300 -38.8%
1. Vauxhall Mokka £15,100 -42%!!!

Surprised not to see the likes of the EQS and Tycan on the list and I was surprised to see so many 'cheaper' cars so high up the list given this is comparing a used price to a used price.

For me, I have to agree with the presenters, the I-Pace, that's A LOT of car to be trading in for just £30k. Not sure about their such positive view of the Lexus, their configurators says the new model still has Chademo which is an instant no for me.

Retail prices will be a lot higher of course...

Well I finally took the plunge and bought an I Pace after months of research and deliberation! I nearly held off another month or two as I don't think the prices have bottomed out yet!

It drives much better than the 16.5 year old Vectra it replaces! I'll be sad to see that go to be honest! (For scrap most likely!)

First issue, insurance. I expected Adrian Flux could sort me out a decent price but nope, they want £3000 when I rang them!

The car keeps asking me to sign in but I can't because the previous owner has it registered on their account still. Will sort it when I get the V5 logbook. It's also stopping me changing EV settings like regen options and stuff like that as it just resets back to default.

Got myself some Faraday pouches that arrived today from amazon so hopefully it won't get nicked.

Already managed to catch the keys in my pocket and open up the frunk while driving! Will be careful with that in the future haha.

I daren't give the car some welly until I'm familiar with the breaks but so far so good!

It is a great set of conditions -- I was tempted to pull the lease on my e2008 and go totally wild with an Alphard. At these prices I'm tempted to go iPace!

i am surprised at taycan as well. Since you can easily get £30k off a £130k taycan new but lots of people have just taken delivery of their factory ordered car with no discount, i dread to think what a one year old one is going be worth? Even if its still £80k, thats £50k depreciation in the first year. Ooof

Do it! :D ideally a 70 or above with the Pivi Pro (not the touch pro) as it's a better entertainment system plus the car only has a single 12v battery instead of 2 that can fail, and one is a weird shaped bike / jaguar one too! (in the older model with both batteries)

E-up (36kwh version) used prices has gone up by about 2-3k from 6/8months ago.

Used to be able to find used for around 9K now the cheapest seems to be 12k

These are CAP trade values from the video and not retail prices so probably more akin to what you’d get on a trade in. The UP stood out to me as something which is potentially holding its value more than it really should still given it’s a very basic car compared to the Corsa.

We have to log in to cars now :( ?

Is there 2FA as well, because I love getting locked out of every account/device, why not cars as well :D

Is there any sign that EV makers are slowing production to prop up used prices like GPUs.

Crypto boom meant sky high demand and then bust means collapsed used card prices so Nvidia/AMD out stupidly high RRP and limit supplies so keep last gen and used prices up to make their new line up look “good value”?

Similar things happening to EVs?

The promise of dirt cheap Chinese EVs have not arrived on these shores.

Ring up the dealer you bought it from and ask them to speak to the previous owner to unregister their account. I had to do that recently for my car so I could activate the tracker but couldnt because it was still registered to the previous owner. A phone call and a couple of days later, all done

No, the market conditions are completely different. If manufacturers don’t sell new cars, they will crash and burn very quickly. They don’t have other more profitable business units (data centre) propping them up their consumer division. Consumers and business customers are buying the same products for the most part.

Don’t forget there isn’t an effective duopoly in the car space unlike CPUs and GPUs, there is a lot of manufacturers going after every sale. There is a hell of a lot of competition and Tesla seem more than happy to cut margins to sell their product.

There is a zero emission mandate, if they don’t sell them and sell ICE in preference, they get fined a considerable amount of money.

I too had to visit a main dealer to get the old owner taken off my car. I guess if I had got from a main dealer it would have been done for me.
and not 2FA as such but if you want you can assign a pin to put in when you get in the car to access the infotainment (tho the car will start without one). I don't have it on tho it's a step to far for me.
