EV general discussion

Some people drive erratically. Speeding up and braking constantly. It's got nothing to do with regen. You should have noticed it before now. They also drive right up to people and brake hard last minute. Just poor driving habits.
usually tied up with tailgating.... they are so close that if i am driving if i even so much as ease off a bit for what ever reason they panic and have to brake. if people just left a sensible gap then they would not need to do this.

imo speeding gets all the bad press but i would much rather have someone doing 80 on a motorway than someone else doing 70mph but trying to climb into my boot.

anyway... its raining so i need to find somewhere to store my soap box :D

I’ve rolled into my drive on 0-2% a few times but never to a public charger.

5-6% is my limit to a public charger these days, 10+% if I am in the sticks or on a motorway - mainly because it can be a long way to the next junction if your charging is at an ‘on motorway’ services where you can’t get off onto local roads.

My limit used to be higher but that was when where wasn’t multiple rapid chargers in every town like there is these days.

This was the other day after a round trip Birmingham to Bristol :p

Got off the motorway with 11 miles charge remaining and 9 miles to home, so was fairly confident I was going to make it; the car severely limited power the last couple of miles though!

Definitely not something I'd do if I was relying on a public charger however

The closest I’ve run it on a public charger haha. Dash to Calais to catch a Eurotunnel shuttle home, had to do a 10 min pit stop at the Tesla there then a longer stop at IONITY at Folkestone services for the run home

ooof you have bigger cahoonas than me. I think 5% is as low as I have been and that was only because the wife was not with me.

Had our charger installed today, with the car's delivery date towards late March. We are currently on the Octopus Flexible tariff having come off tracker a few weeks ago. Should I be looking to start the switch to intelligent go sooner rather than later, or am I best waiting until the vehicle arrived? I feel that I recall @SexyGreyFox mentioned that there was a wait time for it to be set up when you made the change?

No way I'd want to be in that situation - the other night for example accident closed the road about 3 miles from home and I had to back track and detour several miles to get home.

will they allow you only IOG before you have the car? i thought i had to send proof of ownership but to be honest i am not certain (i can barely remember last week let alone what i did 2 years ago )

The test charge is proof you have a compatible charger / EV.

You need to allow them to charge the car once every 30 days or you get kicked off.

Yes, in retrospect I wouldn't do it again. Was debating a 5 minute charge en-route, but at the point I reached the last rapid, I had a good 10 mile buffer, unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse (torrential rain), and it dropped pretty quickly. The choice was then to either keep heading home, or stop at a 7kwh charger.

Shows how much of an impact the weather/temperature has though, I've done the exact same drive before in the summer (even with some extra driving around Bristol), and gotten home with 40 miles remaining!

I've been on IO since 01/07/2023.
The last time my car was charged by IO was 01/07/2023

Ahh I didn't realise that, so that confirms that I need to wait for the car to be on the drive first then. I did look on the Octopus site this morning and clicked the options, but noped out when the next button was to start the switch.

I don't hit public chargers often but on a recent long trip I went to 16%. But it was unknown area and I needed a buffer to get to an alternative DC charger if needs be. There were 8 spaces and there had been usual 3 free on the way up but went to 0 as I got there. Busy shopping centre. Was a 10 mins diversion off the motorway in traffic to get to it. Would have been a lot of faffing to go somewhere else at that point.

One came free but cable was short and no matter what I did couldn't position to make it work. Shortly after another came free and I moved to that and that reached no issue.

Hadn't experienced a charger I couldn't position on before. Had it again on another charger only was able to get in the grass behind. Might reconsider that brand of chargers again. Their cables are too short..

Yes they gave me a date if I recall which I wasn't happy about and then it happened a couple of days later.
You'll probably save more with Flexible while you don't have the car but perhaps ask for iGo a month before arrival.
Ring them up for advice.
Also don't forget that when it gives you a schedule you can use your home appliances for 7p/Kw, yesterday for the first time we had from 18:30 until 05:30 on cheap rate, it's usually from 21:30.

It was the same temp the day before so non applicable.
You think a cell balance lifted your pack by nearly 10kWh?

This is where a little knowledge is dangerous. Dunning Kruger - overnight temp will mean the pack is actually a lot warmer for the car to predict range.

In the realms of physics your post was, IMO, "non applicable"

No idea you're the expert and I can't debate it.
All I know was the temp has been the same for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the balance charge has given me more, not that I need it.
I know the temps because I look at my watch before I go out on my bike to see what I might have to wear.
Funnily enough on Wednesday I was covered up head to foot and freezing and the rest of the week in shorts.

Just to add to this over winter we have been seeing without fail 20 miles for every 10% battery.
So 80% would be 160, 60% was 120 and the lowest we ever run it was down to 47% was around 96.
On Sunday my wife ran it to 10% and it showed 21 on the mileage, in other words zero change in warmer weather for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
It could be a coincidence but perhaps after 4 days the BMS was ready to recalculate and the balance charging did bugger all.
