EV general discussion

The CCP are going to cull car manufacturers through genocide? What on earth is going on in this thread tonight?

I’ll make the message a little simpler as clearly the point has been completely missed, but I have to note that it’s pretty disturbing just how poorly informed some people are. The CCP will enforce policy by any means.

I mean, you haven’t made it any clearer in the slightest old chap… :D

And you said Samsung and LG are worse which may or not be correct.
I'm not seeing any large scale BYD or CATL battery recalls due to cell issues. Prove me wrong if you are so confident.

BYD has a large recall due to some faulty rubber gaskets causing water ingress into battery packs. That kind of issue seldom causes fires, pretty much every early owner of a Tesla Model S will tell you this. They are renown for water ingress on the battery pack due to a sub $1 gasket failing after a decade in the field.

Whereas the 140k GM Bolt's (all of them manufactured to 2022), 80k Hyundai Kona's, and ~30k Jag iPace (I may be wrong on the number for this one) recalls due to LG cell manufacturing faults suggest otherwise. Most of these were manufactured in outside of China (Korea, the EU, the US) and some came from China. While there are some big numbers there, only a handful or two of each have actually gone up in smoke due to the cell manufacturing fault.

There is universal acceptance ICE cars are 20 times more likely to catch fire at this point.

The irony here is CATL and BYD specialise in the manufacture the safest type of cell chemistry, and BYD uses them extensively across their product range. You'd know that if you had a clue.
I said why Chinese cars haven’t caught up and why at least 90% never will. If you disagree with that then just say why.
Clueless. Why are you here?

Pretty sure he's gonna sober up tomorrow, realise what a twit he's made of himself and never return.

Don’t bet on it.

I am not a conspiracy theorist but that BYD battery nonsense is just shocking… see what I did there ;)

Bad jokes aside, I believe the Chinese brands need more tariffs added to protect EU manufacturing. Not because I care about the Euro car industry, but because I genuinely believe China and Russia will be a threat to Europe and America has shown it will not help.

So Europe needs factories and manufacturing. They were all about the globalist capitalist agenda to make money without looking at the long term impact. They felt China was always going to be technologically behind and now they realise they are actually behind the curve and are in a genuine existential crisis.

It’s not just about cheap EVs for the masses. It’s about long term survival of Europe and that includes the UK.

Picked my BYD Atto 3 up last Tuesday, and now have done around 1300km on it heading up to Girona and back. Definitely a decent hit to range when on the motorway with me probably getting 380km to a full charge, with a mix of 110-120kph and set to cruise control. Did catch me out a little on the way up, as i'd had the car less than 24 hours and wasn't really organised. We charged at a Tesla supercharger but i didn't go to 100% and then needed to charge again just before Girona as i hadn't realised how much it's drop. On the way home i was fully charged before setting off from the hotel and only needed a single charge on the way back home and finished with around 20% so that was better.

I rarely do such long trips though so it's not something i'll be too worried about in future as will just charge at home which will cover around 99% of my journeys.

Been a lovely car so far though.

At what point did it catch fire? I have it on good authority BYD will catch fire regularly. ;)

My old volvo seems to have recently started to get things breaking a lot more frequently and though it still does what we need it to do just a bit too much of a risk using it all the time with dog and baby in tow.
Time for a second car for daily usage and we can save the volvo for big trips that should hopefully reduce the rate at which things break. Specs are:

At least as big as a Niro inside, that is the bare minimum.
EV only, will be buying through my business.
No sportback/saloon stuff so tesla is out because the boots are too low for the dog.
Budget 20-25k.

Things I've looked at online based largely on discussion here what seem to be decent picks:
Ioniq 5 in premium or ultimate flavour
E tron 55 s line fat back
Niro 4

Anything else I should consider or be aware of as someone not really dipping into this forum very often? Just lookin for a shortlist and any 'gotcha's like the kia having the theft and therefore insurance issue at the moment.

1400~ Chinese manufacturers currently. The CCP dictates 4 players can remain in the market and the rest will simply be blackballed at the governments discretion.

It’s impossible to say what manufacturers will remain and for me rises wider questions over CCP subsidises and fair market competition. As things stand it’s not about bringing the best car possible to market, but it’s about pleasing an unelected man who’s declared himself supreme.
