EV general discussion

All your money are belong to us. You cannot escape the Borg. You will assimilate.

lol, my only other issue with Tesla is that they're very 'route 1'. And every time I see one, they still remind me of a car designed for GTA. Apart from colour, they all look pretty much the same.

(I am aware the spicier models have a degree of body styling though)

There's an AWD LR model Y for 23k with 26k miles, from Mar 2022. Anything I need to look out for when viewing? Should it have had its brake service done?

I've got a C3 Aircross...it has a key...and you've got to put it in the ignition to start it!

Next they'll be telling me it's actually steam powered not electric.

The Frontera is just the same, very analogue, great for older people making the switch to EV.

You tech visionaries will be sorry when your tach laden world comes crashing down, keys, pfffff, whereas with my bro in laws Massey Ferguson TE20 i helped restore, we'll be laughing whilst hand cranking the engine to start (just mind your thumb in case the handle kicks back, ohhhh, and a few tins of easy start would help too......)!

It’s just out of warranty so you need to do all the same checks you would do for any out of warranty car.

On a 3/Y, squeaks/play on the suspension is the main thing on these. Check the inside edges of all the tyres, if the are worn it’s a tell tail sign of worn suspension components.

As for brakes, Tesla recommends they are periodically stripped and lubed in countries which salt the roads heavily but I doubt you’ll see an invoice for that and hardly anyone does it. Brake fluid is change as needed so may not have been required (or checked frankly). Check the brakes work and check the disks for any corrosion/scoring, if it’s present, they may be an issue. If they are clean, they are fine.

The other main service item is the cabin filters (regular and HEPA), both should have been replaced, the regular filter twice at 4 years old.

Other than that, cosmetic condition mainly. Make sure there are no chips or cracks on the touch screen (expensive). For thy model year, it should have a Tesla granny charger and a 5m or 7m 3-phase 32A type 2 cable included. There should also be a Tesla branded fist aid kit and warning triangle also. If it doesn’t, knock them down, the granny charger is £200 to buy again.

The early cars didn’t come with a parcel shelf so it may not have one. Check all the mud flaps and the PPF on the bottom of the back doors is present. If not, your body work will get trashed quickly from road rash.

About to ditch the old fiesta eccoboost because wet belt agh, not spending 1.5k ISH on that when it's probably worth not much more.

So looking at the ID 3, 260 range is good enough for what we require and it's not much bigger than the fiesta and not an SUV.
Other options maybe.

1: The cupra borne, but that seems a bit more cost wise for the same to me, but looks nicer.
2: MG4 ,cheaper ,more stuff but....it's MG and apparently not the comfiest of cars on longer journeys.

First electric car so should be fun, especially when it will be the wife's car and she is not the most confident of drivers.

ID3 is a solid choice, you'll get around 220-230 miles real world range in the summer and 190-200 in winter depending on driving style. The Borne is exactly the same car underneath but in a fancier looking frock.
MG4 is ok but you can definitely tell it's built to it's budget in comparison to the ID3, although I wouldn't say it's uncomfortable at least not in the time I spent in mine which was a couple of hours commuting a day.

Overall the ID3 doesn't look overly pretty in my opinion but it is pretty solid build wise, pre 23 cars the infotainment is a bit slow but if you use AA/Car play it's rare you ever touch the underlying system anyway. This is apparently much improved on the facelift model.

Id3 is massive inside. Mg4 is smaller. Get a 77 kWh battery is you really need single charge range

Need the space for child and tall adults in the back, we always stop after an hour and half tops long distance so the child can stretch their legs so will never go full range without a good stop.
