EV general discussion

Pulling up at a services this weekend, about 12 tesla charge points in full view, 3 in use, buried around the corner 2 random charge points for others. This is what puts me off other EV makes when we swap next.

part of 2019 (unfortunately) ingwb.com presentation, you can see online, implications of range fear.,
edit: caveat - correlation doesn't prove causality

This. If you have to charge on the road with any kind of regularity, nothing comes close to Tesla

Yep when you look (and I only do out of curiosity right now) its always the same, always a decent Tesla presence, and I haven't yet seen much above 50% in use (think I saw 7 in a 12 once, but it could have been 14 I didn't specifically count them)
If you doing decent distance then the Tesla infrastructure is 1000% better than for every other EV

If its a rarity to travel far though the Tesla "package" is far less clear cut for me

Still very much in the chicken and egg situation here. I can see the other manufacturers really pushing this at some point

They’ll push when the regs require them to, that much is becoming clear.

There is a clear demand for them, everyone built is sold when it hits the market. It’s not coincidental that more are hitting the market when the regs require to or face a fine.

Not forgetting the Tesla chargers are faster and most people only stop for 10-15 mins. Take Membury services for example which I stop at a lot as a key M4 point; Tesla have 8x 150kW chargers at 25p, whereas Ecotricity have 2x 50kW at 30p and 1x 22kW.

It's only a lease car for work and I'm an office boy primarily, I like that Polestar, it'll be charged at work and at home and I do very little travel...

Will get some quotes...

you could choose another EV many avaliable on the market and many more expected by early 2021. what do you need from an EV , how much do you want to spend.

Honestly, I'm just a bit bored with my current car and the P11D savings are pretty good.

I have the option to get a company car which will be paid pretax rather than me spanking almost £500-£600 a month after paying tax on said earnt money...

I have another vehicle at the moment which I'm using but it's a LWB Van, has its perks but I'm bored of driving it... Plus the raw power of electric is something that gets me excited and we're trying to be a green company...

I've asked a few people for quotes on a Polestar, I'll see what it comes back as staff perception with seeing a Tesla in the car park might not be great versus a Polestar nobody has ever heard of.

For sure the Tesla Supercharger Network is simply awesome but you need to ask yourself; how often do you travel more than 250 miles in one trip. If it's rare then you don't need to worry about range anxiety and just do some careful planning when you do.

On another point - Polestar has bought forward my delivery date to this month
Means I need to fast forward a few things.

Because in the general world people see Tesla they think three figures. Sadly some people don’t see further than that and small businesses as you know have to juggle things such as staff perception.

I've got one and we're a team of 9. Granted people's perceptions of its cost are way off though, which shows how strong their brand is, but I wouldn't base my purchasing decision on it!

I think Musk has the risk that his reputation preceeds/halos the brand, Howard Hughes'esque, the tunnel rescue proposal, covid, ...

Saw 3 of these on 1st September, going out on the road - I assume dealer principal demos
from the adds on loop on the tv atm, the electric mini, on the other hand, should be very distinctive, with assymetric wheels,
I'm slightly suspicious they took poetic license with the agility it show in the adverts
1450kg apparently

I don't want to put too much on a public forum, but we have people at all ranges of pay and younger people seem to think the world owes them something and 25k is the starting salary when leaving school with no experience in anything... :p I started on £2ish an hour, I'm only 23. They don't see that, they just see what they want to see, not helped by their friends on £9 an hour to fill a basket.

I've got quotes for the M3LR and P2 now, and I'm stuck!

Overall the M3LR is a better car (driving dynamics, charging network) but has a cheaper interior, god awful QC and is more expensive.

The P2 is very much still developing, all the press cars seem to have been fitted with the 5k performance upgrade which apparently is god awful, the car needs OTA updates to allow for all the added benefits such as smartphone unlocking and YouTube/Netflix etc which wins points with the press - I'm not so bothered! The charging network is less than ideal if you travel a lot, I do not and can stick a 32A Charger outside my parking space.

I'm very stuck and confused if I'm honest. Does anyone have a P2? I'm getting quotes of £420+VAT and around £500 for the M3LR, I'd rather save the money if I could as it's not like I have an allowance to use, whatever I don't spend goes in my pocket... The P2 includes all the servicing too, not that it should be too much in the 2 years I'll have it (I mean what? a cabin filter?)

Fair enough. We have the same here, I'm 33, youngest is 22. I'm also in the same boat and I've posted before about how I dislike the Tesla's having this premium/expensive perception, some of my neighbours have commented (positively, ie "watch the expensive car daughter" etc) despite it literally being parked in between two ordinary cars of equal value (BMW, even top spec hatchbacks etc). I've never been a flashy car guy (previous motor was a Kia Sportage) and I'm still not!

Are you a director or just an employee? I ended up buying my SR+ outright due to the 100% FYA which is of huge benefit to you as director, or even your directors if they can afford the initial outlay.

Director but not shareholder at the moment, so I'm not going to be able to fleece our working capital but also after this year corporation tax isn't going to be too bad, plus we'll probably set up a share scheme which the business will take the cost of.

At the moment, I'm going to sell my i30N to put some after-tax money in my pocket to use the last of my ISA allowance this year, and then work out how to get the business to fund the initial payment and then sacrifice some salary to pay for the car, after this year I think I'm going to have a halt on any pay increase because we were sat on our hands for 6 months but the car will kind of work out as a pay increase albeit only a modest one as some of my salary will go towards it.

So although I'm paying for it, staff wont see it and I think it puts the Tesla on a back foot, purely because they're mostly apprentices that I'm worried about who can be earning somewhere around £5 an hour but being given free training to earn 30k in a few years time - They just don't see it that way!

People's perceptions when it comes to vehicles is so strange and the effect it has on how they treat you. I got quite some attitude in the past when driving a nicer vehicle than people [much] higher up the company, some of them it obviously hit the ego, and so often get a completely different reception between say turning up in a Golf and my Navara when it is the first impression people get of me.
