EV general discussion

Question for either Polestar 2 or BYD Seal drivers / owners (specifically the Long Range AWD Polestar 2 and either variant of the Seal), what is the real world range achievable in either at various times of the year and general thoughts?

I've had my Seal Excellence for about 6 months now (7k miles so far) and I've been getting about 240/250 miles this winter and I'm not shy about preconditioning the car before setting off. I usually charge the car to 100% and use up to 24% each day so it's about 3 days before I charge it again, plus I need a bit of a buffer in case of road closures/diversions etc. I got over 300 miles in the summer iirc.

Sounds similar to my i4 but why are you charging to 100% when you're only using 24% each day?

Thanks for the input on this. Sounds like decent range which should be marginally bettered by the RWD "Design" model (based on better quoted efficiency numbers). :)

especially if its a lease seal with LFP would you conciously try and preserve battery life avoiding 100% charges, loss of regen capacity might be more significant.

LOL r4@1 richard deer ex mi6 head "M" wouldn't buy a chinese car as they could turn them off by software control (as apparetly john deer did for russian tractor in past)

I think your question might be down to my bad phrasing - I was meaning to say that the range I stated was from 100% SoC.

My charging behaviour is to charge to 100%, then charge again after a few quarters i.e. rough percentages 75%, 50%, 25% at which point I'll charge to 100% or at least as much as my 7 hours of EON's cheap rate allows.

Every 3 months it's recommended to drain down to <10% SoC and charge to 100% to recalibrate the battery or it's BMS or some such gubbins. I only mention this because it's in my mind to do it soon :D.

Tyre and road noise, it's fine below about 40 but once you get up to 60 or 70 it's very annoying, really drowns the radio out kind of road noise.

It's got Michelins on it too so it's not the fault of some linglong ditch finders :(

We had the boot full of those packing chips in plastic bags when we were helping someone pack to move house, the amount of noise that was removed was very noticeable. Also the Michelins are not quiet, like at all, I thought they were until we changed them for the new non-EV specific Michelin's. If you want to reduce road noise I'd say get something to line the back/boot/wheel arches it will make a big difference, or you could just whack 5 of these in the boot and take 'em out when you need the space. :D

Oh dear, with all the flooding today several drivers at work have come out with the opinion if they'd have had to go out in the conditions with EV vans today they'd have caught fire or short-circuited because water and electricity don't mix...

Sound like a bunch of top notch well educated people you work with.

Ah I see now, thanks for the clarification :)

Imagine what they think we do when it rains...

Sorry, can't pick up your mother in law today, the rain might short circuit my car

We bought the OH’s Nan (85) a new vacuum - a cordless one with two battery packs, the same as ours.

She was kept awake all night worrying about them self-combusting.

Doesn’t have a problem with being driven around in my car though! :D

Ah that's really interesting, i might investigate getting some sound deadening material and putting some around the boot and rear wheel arches then and then look at changing the tyres. I do have a load of packing material in the garage though so might just fill the boot up with old polystyrene and bubble wrap for now for the commute!

The rears are the original Michelins so they could probably do with being changed in the not too distant future anyway as its got 46k on it now.

Wait... you mean to tell me I can actually drive either of our cars when its raining...

I thought they were fair weather only...

On a more serious note, it was quite a sight this morning seeing what just looked like a lake as came over one of the hills on the way in to work. Wasn't a lake but basically a large chunk of the Somerset fields from Ilchester out to Langport under water. The A303 was/is closed West bound around Ilchester (I say West bound as vehicles were coming through East bound but they may have joined after the closed section), A37 and A359 also closed into Yeovil.

Also, I know I mentioned before that our LTA efficiency is around 4.4-4.5 m/kWh... My wife seems determined to make a dent in this by achieving a lofty 365wh/mile.... (or ~2.7m/kWh) which is somewhat commendable given the relative efficiency of the SR+. I can only assume her trip back home involved a little bit of sustained throttle application... *cough*...

My mother in law curses the Chinese since covid, she even stopped having a Chinese takeaway.
Then I remind her, whilst she's being lorded about, that she's sorting in a Chinese car.
Oh the irony:cry:

I didn't want to complicate my post earlier, so didn't add it, but something which didn't help with the opinion some were coming out with was that a nearby company had grounded their EV fleet for the day - but not because they couldn't drive in the conditions but because they use them to go back and forth from a place near Ilchester where the road had been closed due to the floods... (EDIT: Not actually sure if it is Ilchester or Ilminster but same difference so to speak).

It was pretty crazy yesterday I thought it would be worse driving but aside from a couple of big puddles the roads I used were actually pretty clear of water by the afternoon but in a lot of places the fields were flooded right up to the sides of the road. I dodged it a bit not having to be out in the morning.

Could be both to be fair. The A37 was closed from Ilchester to Yeovil due to the River Yeo bursting its banks and the A303/A30 was closed from Ilminster / Chard roundabout (with the A3088) all the way to the junction where the A303 becomes the A30 or vice versa.

Looks to be back open now but still likely a lot of standing water.
