EV general discussion

I remain hopeful that the new E Class estate EV will be good and only list in a couple of years…

Something that I am looking forward to as well, but the saloon version, I have no need for all that boot space presently. Will have to see what extra space the make use of in the C-class though as that may be large enough on the inside too.

August last year my EV6 went into limp mode. Was able to drive the 4 miles or so (at 25mph) to the dealer. ICCU was replaced after a couple of weeks. I'd previously had the updates. Apparently the software updates reduce the frequency that surges happen, and so effectivelt just push the issue down the line a bit.

But I just noticed this weekend that my car will not charge from any DC chargers, only AC. Tried 5 different DC chargers. I very rarely use a DC charger, so this was the first time I'd tried it since the ICCU was replaced. Apparently another subsystem (VCMS ?) can sometimes be taken out when the ICCU goes. However I'd assume that would produce an error code on it's own which would have been picked up by the dealer at the time. Anyway, it's booked in to get looked at.
Mine needed a replacement ICCU (again)

Its coming back next week.

I've got an 8 hour round trip on Monday though, so Enterprise kindly replaced the 2008 EV courtesy car with this beauty.

S350. Filled it up and it's showing 600 miles of range.

Yeah.

When they dropped the 2008 EV off they said they knew it wasn't a like for like car so to get back in touch. It did me fine for my local trips, but then I badgered them a few times that I had a 500 mile round trip to do on Monday and the 2008 wasn't really going to cut it.

He did say it was very rare, especially as it was diesel and most of their fleet are petrol and EV

Just accepted a job offer at a power plant, so for the 1st time in 15 years after working at sea in either the Merchant Navy or offshore oil and gas industry, I’m going to have a job with a commute, about 15 miles each way.

So, we’ll need a second car, and as one of the perks of the job being free EV charging at work, I was considering taking out a loan to buy something like a used Cupra Born/VW ID3, Polestar 2 or Megane E-tech, but I’ve since discovered from the paperwork sent through with the offer that the company also offers access to a salary sacrifice EV scheme through Octopus Energy, but I can’t really see what the options are as you need a login to access the site to get a quote.

I lease a car through an EV SS scheme at work although we use Tusker not Octopus. Not sure about your employer but with mine I had the wait 6 months to get access to the scheme. The prices (on Tusker) can range from very good to very bad and change weekly depending what deals they have with the manufacturer. Chinese cars like BYD seem to be very well priced compared to others, I got the Seal and so far so good.

If you're in no hurry, it's probably worth waiting to check what the scheme offers you - it's basically hassle free motoring as everything is included. A quick check of the Tuskers site shows a PS2 LR RWD 10k miles 36 months at £450 after tax (for a default value of 100k pa, £720 pre tax). A Cupra Born for the same deal is £340 after tax, 540 pre.

Basically the pre-tax lease rate is quite high (but includes insurance etc) but generally looks competitive once you calculate the effect on your take home.

I really love the idea of the PV5, i'm just waiting for one to appear at my local Kia dealer to go and have a poke around one.

Looks like the perfect all in 1 vehicle for me.

I love the idea, the PV5 doesn't quite tick the boxes for me though, my nearest Kia dealer has some decent discounts on them currently (or had) though that also included some government scheme which I'm not sure the criteria for.

PV5 Plus LR, 36 months at 8k miles on salary sacrifice is £365 nett on our scheme. Do like the sound of one of them, just not sure the wife could ever get used to it as her car......

I’ve given in, agreed to part ex my golf r estate (not really using the space anymore, and never drive it like they deserve to having kids in the car) for a v3 Cupra Born with the bigger battery.

Got a good deal on the part ex, means I pocket about £7k, and my new monthly cost for the Born and insurance/tax is the same as what it was costing me to run the R each month.

R is 10 years old now, never had any issues and meticulously maintained, but I just have a feeling it’s time to move it on and try the EV world. In 4 years time it would have hit 100k mileage and value fall off a cliff, the deposit amount I’ve paid on the Born is essentially what I would lose on the golf over 4 years, but I get (hopefully) 4 years of trouble free driving in a brand new car.

I do know I am going to miss the sound, but hoping the rest will be ok…I won’t miss being at the petrol station every week!
