EV general discussion

Has anyone been using roof boxes on their EV, curious as to what kind of mileage loss you had while doing long trips.Obviously you'd just charge it more frequently but our diesel looses about 7-8mpg.

I have a few times, and while I didn't exactly measure it, the range was noticeably impacted. Unfortunately on most of those trips it coincided with some awful weather conditions, which probably had more of an effect than the box itself

Sorry, probably not particularly useful :s

oh! do you have a quick and dirty step-by-step?
i tried to delete my initial tesla/hypervolt combo and re-add it but it still defaults to the tesla
I'm hoping I'll be able to just delete the device by going to my devices within the octopus app, click on the car, i4 in mine, then click on the cog top right and disconnect the device. I've done this once or twice that way in the past and it's always allowed me to set it up again.

if you don't want to connect the car but the charger (and imo charger is a better solution) then find a car with a similar sized battery which you know isn't supported by octopus.
for instance my mate who has a long range Tesla model y put in an ipace.

that way you can charge any car you want on intelligent.

note this is with a zappi, dunno about others.
Thanks for the heads up, I only need to charge my i4, so no need for any other car, it has worked ok(ish) up until now, with 32a commando selected as the charger in the app devices.
I'll try it the official way first and see how I get on but the Hypervolt is quoted as being compatible with IOG, octopus actually would install one, so we'll see. But yes it does currently connect directly with the car's api, unless BMW block it either further.
I'll report back once it is all up and running.

I'll be driving my 2021 LRDM Polestar 2 from Newcastle to near Eindhoven, via Dover, for a family holiday at the end of May and Im just trying to work out the best solution to minimise public charging costs.
IEcharge still looks a good option for NW france https://eleport.com/price-report/#France matching tesla.

[
[ french ev chargers - video on using different networks .. on 600k trip id7/m3 they needed additional 15k detour for the tesla superchargers versus ionity
id7 works out cheaper using ionity, m3 cheaper with superchargers and the cheaper energy they get there ]

apparently it was, the last time logsi mentioned it (idk personally)

^
I've never tested it and was an unknown so it was sort of assumed. They kept on lauding supercharging in the Polestar Charge app. I'm unsure!

It is there, but as per my comment yesterday it's badly priced Vs Tesla membership
From memory it seemed to vary quite radically regionally. My Polestar Charge when checking pricing was sometimes cheaper but I can't confirm the actual costs as I was just going off the apps and not charging. It may be different now. Got my first long journey up to Newmarket in the Polestar next month so we'll see how that goes. It was fine when I drive a Tesla back from Derby so not expecting many problems here either. Will just set it on the android auto and go wherever it says.

I have to say I am very impressed with this Kia with 334,000 miles on it - guy paid £5k for it and still does well over 200 miles on the original battery and motor.

Absolute bargain even if you had to replace all the suspension and give the brakes a good strip down and clean

I've got 170 miles on the docket tomorrow, it will cost ~£3.

The new VED on that will be £5.10....

EDIT: I could get the train but it's £115 for an unrestricted ticket or £75 for specific booked trains with zero flexibility - you miss it, you are paying £115.

EDIT2: In the fullness of fairness you also need to add Car parking which will be £9 in a London car park...

Model 3 ordered in the end (too good to turn down, happy to share referral if anyone still pondering it) to replace the MG4 when it goes back, also thinking about buying the MG if it's offered at a sensible price. Not sure I'd buy a random used one but feels different given we know the car.

Currently about £9 in fuel duty in a 45 mpg petrol car...
True, I’m pretty sure it’s a phycological thing and if they just charged added £300 to VED with no milage checks no one would bat an eyelid.

£300 is a lot more than most would pay under the new system.

It’s also a highly imperfect road charging system, e.g. charging for milage done abroad while simultaneously paying say French tolls while not charging foreign registered vehicles anything. Stuff like that just rubs people up the wrong way.

Honestly I think they should give 3 years grace to the PPM tax for new EVs/PHEVs to tally up with the first MOT. Would provide incentive to buy new EVs and also reduce the admin burden and associated costs.

I’m sure MOT testers are elated at the thought they are also becoming tax collectors given they already get enough nonsense from customers trying to get a dodgy MOT.

The other element is the whole ‘I’m altering the deal, pray I don’t change it further approach to it’.

Many EVs on the road would have been purchased at a significant premium over their OCE counterparts and only really made sense because the TCO eventually worked out to be beneficial. The more they retroactively change the deal, the longer and longer it takes to pay off.

In other news, I popped in and had to book a test drive for the iX3 this week, but did sit in the showroom one for a little while and it was a mixed bag:
1. The standard black on black on black colour way for the interior is so drab, I've never sat in a car with a Pan Roof that felt so depressing
2. The interior quality/design is really disappointing, the steering wheel 'buttons' are horrendous, both in looks and operation, not to mention, the clear plastic/piano black is so Temu these days, the door mounted seat controls are out of a christmas cracker and the area of the seat the seat controls would normally be located felt weirdly and awkwardly designed, like it cost too much for a proper piece of trim down there. The centre console is not made from nice materials and the angular design elements are not that ergonomically friendly,.
3. The steering wheel does not adjust high enough, even with the seat on its lowest setting, getting in had my legs brush the bottom of the wheel in a way that is more saloon than SUV.
4. As with other BMWs, the rear ingress is ridiculous awkward if you are a normalish height adult, the door aperture sweeps forwards above the seats rather than follow the seat line as per most cars.
5. The fit/finish seems a step back in someways, they had the current iX3 on the other side of the showroom and that felt more premium inside.
6. The UI is so cluttered and IMO poorly designed, it's trying way too hard and falling a bit short.

However
1. The vision panel is nice, I prefer it to having a second screen above the steering wheel.
2. The looks are OK, I think they'll grow on most people and it looks fresh
3. The seats are comfy enough

Overall, the test drive is going to be interesting, I am led to believe its slightly more supple and the steering much more precise than the Model Y and I'll love to see how refined it is vs the Juniper Y, which I've just booked 30 mins after I should be finished with the iX3..
