EV general discussion

It's very... chintzy. Without the focus on over the top light shows, neon bling on every surface and a home cinema sized infotainment screen it may well be a very good car underneath. It will be interesting to see what it is like without the "hyperscreen" as well.
Only my going for the very based model do you reduce the screen real estate. That one comes with 2 screens. The rest either come with 3 separate screens that span the dashboard, or a hyper screen that basically does away with the borders of the spearate screens, giving you one big screen.

I'm assuming this whole 3rd screen for the passenger thing eminated from china. i don't see the appeal myself. If I go for this car, which I might well, it'll be an unused display.

I'm wondering how robust than 1000 led grille display is. You have to assume that once these are out a few years they will be running around with odd ball segments out from being hit with stones.

I just had to Google it and it is clear what happened. Designer is working on initial sketches for the new Juke, messes up and screws the paper up. Faced with starting again he looks at his watch, 4:45. Sod that he says and flattens out the paper the best he can. Senior management come in the next day and talk themselves into how edgy and contemporary it is.

Nah, it's got lovely curves, you just don't have the GPU power to render it properly, so you're looking at the low poly model :p

Well, the R5 Iconic+ has arrived last week, been out for a few local runs in it. Overall a nice drive, very go-kart like and brings back memories of my old 5GTT and Clio Cup. Not too sure on the user interface for the dashboard, seems little cluttered but that might just be because the i5 has got so much screen real-estate it feels more spaced out. The delivery driver got the wife very confused with his instructions on how to drive the car, telling her she had to put the handbrake on manually every time she stopped at lights etc as the car would just drive forward, once he'd gone i showed her the auto-hold function and she's a lot calmer about the change from an 11yr old (battered) manual diesel Clio to the new world of auto style EV's. Still lots to learn yet though, time to RTFM over the next weeks. The key card is annoying, no hole for a keyring, though just found out it will let you put a string lanyard onto it for a house key.

Also took the i5 M60 to Wales last week, managed 3.5mi/kwh on the journey there (I'm usually around 2.5mi/kwh on average, didn't get an M60 to drive economically....), splash and dash at the Gridserve at Chester services on the way fleeced me of a few quid with their 89p/kwh pricing. Far nicer on the pocket on Anglesey with the Tesla station at Menai Science Park, 39p/kwh before 8am/after 8pm, even peak charging at 51p/kwh felt reasonable. Peak rate at Tesla (3 of 12 units in use) was 194kw with an average of 123kw for 20mins and 42kwh, Gridserve (all 15 350kw stalls in use along with all 3 of the 50kw, so big load for the site) was peak of 83kw and average of 43kw for 26kwh charge.

Of course they were going to appeal.

I can’t profess to be a VAT expert but I know a lot more than most. The original decision did look at little sus.

First tier tribunals to get overturned at lot on appeal, particularly in areas with limited precedent of similar fact patterns.

It could go either way mind.
No I meant I wasn't even aware of the original court case and ruling.
Life must be too quiet in our little Lincolnshire village, or I don't get out enough. :)

Haha. Fair enough.

It was doing the rounds a few weeks ago and the people campaigning for a VAT reduction on public charging were hailing it as a massive victory.

The reason why I say it was a bit sus is because the fact pattern is highly specific to this community based charging system.

to the new world of auto style EV's

Something actually more people struggle with than I'd have thought - while not common I know some people who really struggle to override the instinct to immediately put their foot on the brake when the vehicle starts creeping as auto/EVs do.

My GV70 has auto hold, but I don't tend to use it.

I do use the adaptive regen though, which brakes automatically if the car Infront is slowing or stopped but will not come to a complete stop, you still need to manually brake otherwise you will just slowly go in to the back of the vehicle in front.

The iX3 will automatically stop and recognises traffic lights as well. They almost drive themselves now if you want them to.

Well on the cupra (any MEB) you simply stop and it doesn't creep until you press the accelerator (with autohold turned on), same as my M-DCT gearbox.

Our Kona has auto hold but you need to remember to turn it on every time you get in the car, that's led to a couple of wtf moments when I've come from the ID3 :o
No idea why you'd think that's a non permanent setting.

I got one of these to match the car's colour:

There's a discount code on one of the R5 groups on Facebook, I can try and find it if you want to order one.

A little tip on the auto-hold: if you firmly press the brake pedal it engages, but if you just gently hold the pedal then releasing it will set the car moving again, handy for stop-start traffic. Also bear in mind that auto-hold keeps the brake lights lit.

I very rarely use the parking brake button unless I'm stopped in traffic at night, it will engage automatically if you turn off the car or release the driver's seatbelt.

Possibly picking our Atto3 up tonight.

Had a hire car booked for a long trip to Girona next week (around 1200km) as using my Jeep wasn't an option. Can't decide whether to keep it and avoid adding loads of miles onto a brand new car or just sack off the booking as was only €50

Smart charger installation booked for the 8/5/26, all in all quite quick.
Smart Home Charge are a local company, as based in Peterborough, which means I'm keeping to my word of supporting local businesses.

Weeeeeee....

Dinky!

I'm the first to give any car the benefit of the doubt, horses for courses and all that.

That said, that Juke.. good god man. What the hell were they thinking
