EV general discussion

No sportback/saloon stuff so tesla is out because the boots are too low for the dog.
Budget 20-25k.

Think you have your wires crossed, Tesla Model Y is perfect for your use case. Colleague of mine just had had his second one and he fits 2 fully grown kids in the back, and his two chocolate labradors in the boot without issues.

They are a lot of car for the money, and the LR warranty is upto 120k miles on the battery and motor.

A model Y boot is significantly "better" for big dogs than the smaller "Volvos" i.e xc40/ps2. The Tesla has a massive boot but I'm assuming the issue is how high the floor sits?

If you genuinely need a more square / tall boot than that for your dog you'll be limited to a non coupe Enyaq or possibly an ID7 estate (depends on what shape is useful to you). The bz4x/ Subaru estate versions that are coming soon could do it too potentially

Model Y boot is larger compared to the 3. If the floor sat a little deeper 3” in the Y it would be spot on. Still, it’s a much more practical vehicle than the 3. It’s all the car someone would need imo.

Really don’t know what to do about next car.

There just aren’t any EVs on the market which really appeal to me.

- Minimum 300 mile range, but ideally 350+
- 250 BHP
- Speed limiter function (I use this religiously with all the driving I do, as it saves me from worrying about speed limits)
- Comfy (the ID4/7 is quite firm and very jiggly on A/B roads)
- Electric memory seats (shared car with other half and regularly swap)

i4 is basically impossible to find with the right spec. It’s also so ugly it annoys me.

BYDs don’t have a speed limiter function - this is a non negotiable for me.

Closest car is the last gen IX3 but the range is quite poor in the winter, and wouldn’t cope with the travel I do - absolutely cannot be bothered with public charging. It’s such a PITA/expensive and don’t really have the time for it.

Capri is even firmer than the VW products.

Can’t find an Enyaq with DCC

Polestar might be a contender but do see lots of issues with infotainment. Don’t really want to take this risk.

Perfect car would be a 5 series touring but EV. The newer one isn’t in budget by quite a way.

So get something else that isn't an EV if you aren't willing to compromise on one of your listed items. Then you need to ask yourself if you are giving up something you prefer other than a nice to have feature or function.

I'm sure I've mentioned it before, having no speed limiter function is my biggest bugbear of the Seal, I miss it a lot having had BMWs for the previous 20 years. There is the intelligent cruise control function but it's use of the regen braking and acceleration to maintain a set speed (downhill, uphill, cars in front etc) is annoying and doesn't feel particularly nice, digital even. Additionally it illuminates the brake lights every time it decelerates, seemingly neurotically - going from 61 to 60mph doesn't warrant such action but that's probably legislation. It's almost forgivable in Eco mode but feels a bit slow, in Sports mode it's too jarring. I also don't like not having my foot on the accelerator, dislike any type of cruise control tbh.

So I learned to live with it and never use ICC to maintain a speed; back to speed matching with the pedal like it's 1999. It was tough at first but you get used to it, just not in Sports mode because if you put the even the slightest bit of extra pressure on the pedal you've gained +10mph before you know it.

I'm hoping they add it to a software update in the future, the ability to reconfigure a button to enable it, but I'm doubtful.

Had I known about it's omission before I bought the car (I assumed it's a feature on all cars!) would it have affected my decision to get the Seal? Probably not, because I feel it's omission is surmountable, whereas other factors were not (cost, range, looks, other features as a whole etc).

Probably just me, but I’ve never used a speed limiter in my life - I’ve had cruise control in cars for 20 years and adaptive cruise in my last 3 cars, 3 of which were electric (Polestar 2 and EQC).

I just don’t get what the point of it is or why it would be needed instead of adaptive cruise (which I will never have a car without now…)

Edit: about to swap to an EQE which would probably fit all your requirements @MrRockliffe, but you have to go quite a few years old to get them at a reasonable price and I’m an equipment whore who needs the top trim level :D

I’ve had one and the steering wheel and stupid lighting logic put me off it

Its just really useful for residential driving, especially in places with average speed or lots of speed cameras, where it isn’t appropriate to have a cruise control system on.

It means you get to limit your speed but retain full control of the car

Funny how people have different must haves. I never use ACC even on longer drives and also never use speed limiters. Ironically because they tend to get it wrong more than I do. Like when they think a slip road sign is the motorway speed limit and drastically slow from 70 to 50, or 60 to 30.

I think my thought process is the more you automate the less you stimulate. Basically the less a driver has to do raises the chance they become zoned out rather than remaining engaged.

I use ACC a lot but I do have the speed limit change turned off. I have zero interest in it trying to kill me braking to 5mph on a NSL when it gets confused :o

I set mine manually, have it in my 2014 series and it’s used all the time

I don’t use the adaptive speed limiter function because as you say, it’s too often wrong.
