EV general discussion

I loved my Ioniq 5 the amount of space inside is fantastic and the seats are so comfy. I’m not a fan of Tesla I test drove a few but they are all very meh to me to minimalist I think and everything being on the one screen was a pain. I get why people like them though.
The nerd in me likes the Tesla and having access to the Supercharger network if doing a long trip would be handy. I like the pano roof, looks spacious inside and storage is fantastic.

However, have read that the suspension is quite firm, almost sport suspension. In my younger days, something that wouldn’t bother me but does now. Also, having speedo on the centre screen just feels a bit odd. Surely a basic HUD would have been useful?

But, I’ll reserve judgement until I actually drive one.

For me, the Ioniq 5 currently feels like nice transition from years of ICE to first EV.

Have you considered the Kia EV6 ? I have one now and have been very happy with it. Very similar to the Ioniq 5 size wise it’s familiar but different. Longer warranty too so going a bit older is an option.

EDF nowadays

this is the case with all EV tariffs from all providers
Why EDF, it has a £75 exit fee and the quote I got from them was £40 per month higher.
In comparison..
Octopus:
Day rate = 28.56p
Night rate = 6.90p
Standing Charge = 52.76

EDF:
Day Rate = 28.62p
Night Rate = 6.99p
Standing Charge = 56.79p

I considered the EV6 but my other requirement is our female Irish Red Setter needs to go into the boot and from looking at images and videos, it looks more comfortable in the Ioniq 5 and definitely in the Tesla.

Shame as there are some AWD GT Line’s in my budget.

My golden fits fine in the EV6 and he is a big dog. It’s a bit more sloped but plenty of room for him to get up and turn round etc. You can put the floor in its lowest setting and it’s much better but ours is in the flush position and it’s fine.

EDF 'Night rate' is 7 hours (23:00 to 06:00) rather than 6 hours on IOG (23:30 to 05:30) and I don't think EDF are as hot on their 'fair usage' whereas Octopus are very shortly going to be introducing their 6 hour smart charging cap.

Yes I know that there is a extra hour with EDF, however the £75 to exit the contract amounts to over 2000 miles I could have, which is more than half my yearly amount. My man maths cannot figure out how that is a better deal. Also with EDF the whole of the charges are higher anyway.
I already know about the changes to octopus but it will not affect me as I'll just set the charging period to their 23:30-05:30 times schedule.

…don’t exit the contract?

Unless you're planning to leave within a year of signing up, then the £75 is irrelevant really, it's only payable to leave within the fix period.

Tariff rates obviously differ for different people but for me Octopus rates are higher day and night vs EDF.

IOG:
Day 32.72p
Night 8p
SC 47.71

EDF:
Day 30p
Night 6.99p
SC 52.85p

Then you'll probably find yourself removed from Intelligent Go sooner or later and dropped onto regular Go, because the entire point of it is that they control your charging schedules. That would also be counter productive anyway because you're removing any chance of getting additional cheap slots outside of the core hours.

What's everybody's go to for leccy providers with car charging, was looking at octopus but they balance it out with a high day time charge..

Depends on who provides the best price in your area. For me, E-On are substantially cheaper than everyone else.

This is what I have:

12am-6am: 4.99p
6am-12am: 27.65
SC: 60P

Stupid questions, but how do people buy cars these days? (ie if getting it on finance)

Are there deals to be done at dealers?
And why would you NOT go to a main dealer? As in, why go to somewhere else, when surely that's another link in the chain, and more costs?

The other half is increasingly keen on a Renault 5, but not sure it's big enough (so maybe go for a Scenic).

Personal loan - 6% from my bank against the dealership 10% and it appears in my app next to my current account so I can pay extra off anytime I want to with a few clicks.

CarWow / Autotrader will at least show new car deals from various dealers in one place.. plenty of dealers with in-stock cars offering money off for the R5 of various trims.. don't assume all dealers can match, some may have allocation or other reasons they can offer more off.

As for buying, many people get PCPs etc, but interest rates make all the difference, and always benchmark against borrowing yourself via a personal loan, I've literally saved thousands doing this vs the finance package offered by the garage..

Someone I've been talking to on the i4 forum has done the same and for months Octopus haven't complained. I can't see why they would with the changes they've forced upon us either.
We shall see, if they bitch to me about it I'll just put it back on.

When it actually changes, there will be a toggle to cap your session at 6 hours of charging anyway - you'd be better off doing that, as at least that way you might still get given extra cheap periods during the day whereas restricting your schedule to 23:30-05:30 yourself will guarantee you don't get any.

I’m amazed you care about changing at all given you could pretty much walk your annual mileage.
Lol, unfortunately we have a 'subscription' for my partner at Peterborough Hospital which is a necessity to have a car, plus we live in a village that only has a pub for our entertainment.

Not sure if it’s just me, but I don’t like charging options where you can only add credit, and only in set amounts. Where I’m staying they have a decent amount of AC 7kw chargers, but it’s ran by park and recharge. I can only add £5, £10, £20, £50.

I tried timing the charge vs amount per kWh but ended up a -£1.50 balance. Because the charger doesn’t update in realtime to the app it goes over. Presumably I can just leave this account in negative, I’m not prepared to add £5 minimum just to leave them with the money.
