EV general discussion

Personal loan - 6% from my bank against the dealership 10% and it appears in my app next to my current account so I can pay extra off anytime I want to with a few clicks.

So oyu just bought the car outright? Presumably there's very little deal to be done this way? As dealers presumably want you to get a car on finance instead.

EDIT: Renault have 0% on at the moment it seems.

Lol, unfortunately we have a 'subscription' for my partner at Peterborough Hospital which is a necessity to have a car, plus we live in a village that only has a pub for our entertainment.

Fair one - I should stop putting my own life circumstances onto everyone else really! Having been stationed at Waddington for a few years I can understand the isolation!

As far as the dealership was concerned, yes - trade in plus bank transfer. I’ve never been able to haggle on anything because in my mind it’s something I want and I’m either happy to pay the advertised price and or I’m not! Plus, when it comes to cars I’m picky about equipment levels so usually I’ll have been searching for ages for a particular one and when I find it I’ll just go for it, numbers be damned. My recent one was at the top end of what I wanted to spend so I did a lot of thinking and watched them lower the price by a grand over a month before pulling the trigger.

The exception is if there’s an advantage to taking their finance like an extended warranty, but even then I’ll make one payment then clear it a low rate loan.

This is what I did with my R5, two years 0% and I'll pay the rest off at the end. Dealer gave me a small discount too, nothing substantial but this was over a year ago so these days there should be better offers, plus the enhanced EV grant.

If the R5 is too small you could consider the R4, not that it's particularly spacious either.

I think the Scenic would be the next logical larger car?

Seems to review well too. I think my nearest Renault dealer is in Worcester, so may take the trip up sometime to have a gander.

A Model Y is about £100 a month more (premium long range). But I've hated ever trip I've had in a Tesla, and thought they felt very cheap and poorly made (only ridden in various taxis, so probably not the best place to gather opinions.....or maybe it is?)

The biggest complaint in the R5 is the limited space for rear passengers so the extra 20cm of the R4 remedies that somewhat and at least gives people with feet somewhere to put them. Next size up would be the Megane, then the Scenic.

I don't understand the hate of Teslas (of course I am biased). I may not have had super luxurious cars to compare it to but it's the best car I've owned, quality wise. The car previous, 2023 Audi S3 saloon feels like it was a step bellow. I understand the S3 isn't exactly the halo product of Audi but it wasn't exactly a budget car either.

You are ignoring the clown of a CEO and like it or not you are supporting him by buying a Tesla.

They could have the bestest ever EV for bestest ever price… I could not bring myself to buy it cus Musk is a ****.

Agreed. I am going to post my thoughts about my new 2026 Model 3 RWD in more detail soon, but the quality is fine for the price point. All the key materials and touchpoints are on par with something like a 3 Series, and that's all they need to be.

Perhaps slightly unusually, I've come from a BMW 7 Series, and the fit and finish on that was about as good as you get, short of a Bentley. The Tesla is absolutely fine, and I am fussy about stuff like this too. I do know the older Model 3 is considered to be a bit worse, but I haven't been in one of those.

Considering the price of those new PCH deals for the Model 3, there isn't a better car on the market IMO. I get people hesitating over Musk, I did myself, but at the end of the day it's all a bit virtue-signally isn't it.

It’s not 2020 anymore guys… we all know Tesla are no longer poor quality muck. Most have no issues with the quality now and the fact you guys seem the gravitate towards the pragmatic “it’s no worse than any other car” misses the point.

For an increasingly large number of people, it’s not the car… it’s Musk. And no… it isn’t just virtue signaling, the guy is a reprehensible human being. If you can look beyond that, that’s a you thing but stop pretending everyone else is just woke virtue signaling.

I bought a car not a political statement. Personally, I've never entertained Musk so it's super easy to ignore him.

Plus, seeing as most of my cars have been from the VAG who don't exactly have a glowing history I've just moved from one 'bad' company to another.

The person he was responding to was talking about the build quality, not Musk...?

If people don't want to buy one because of Musk, that's up to them. I understand it.

Oh the old VAG defence. Jesus look it’s OK to just say you support a nazi and we can move on ;)

Again, I bought a car. I haven't bought something as a statement.

It's not you driving it, relax.

I relaxed, I was giving you an explanation that for a large number of people the build quality of a Tesla is utterly irrelevant. I was helping you “understand the hate of Tesla’s”.

Why are we banging on about musk when the initial statement was someone thought the quality was crap and that's what people were responding to?

People were talking about the build quality, if they'd mentioned Musk then fair enough, but you brought it up.

Because a further question was posed as to not understanding the “hate for Tesla”. It’s not just about build quality for many “haters”.

No actually, you brought up Musk in one of your replies. The absolute mental gymnastics on display is hilarious :D
