Evanesence

she is quite mezmorising but then i have a 'thing' for female singers who play piano !!!

she can sing, write and compose and if she didnt mind doing the dishes i'd consider marriage :p , would love to see her and Tori Amos do a duet!

regarding the albums sadly theres a lot of 'fillers' amongst the good tracks but theres also some crackers... enjoy them for what they are and dont be put off by the 'hate' crowd.

Female singers leave me with a big grin on my face :D

Evanescence - good poppy

Lacuna Coil - good, song of note: Our Truth

Nightwish - tarja era good, later bad. The song complexity and operatic sound were their defining quality. So many songs but ones I love: End of All Hope She is my Sin (3:36 onwards .. gawd damn it) and finally.. the slightly more poppy but superb Everdream .. this is a really good foot to the floor car song!

Epica - another mezzo-soprano, a heavier and the songs are great (redheaded singer too ;)) Song of note: Cry for the Moon

Temptation Within - quite Kate Bush.. very refreshing too. Song of note: Mother Earth

Switching away slightly...
Diana Damrau singing Queen of the Night even better on stage here out acting the majority of TV actors.. and her she can play evil well!

I do like Evanesence, I prefer the really old stuff before they were a bit more mainstream. It was a bit less guitar and a bit more piano.

Was due to see them last year in Manchester but the concert was called off. :(

Within Temptation are sligtly more gothic than Evenesence but I find they are more passionate and that the quality of singing is better, especially live.

Watch Black Symphony for a very awesome experience.

Within Temptation are fine apart from the way the lead singer waves her arms about when singing. Such a small thing, but so insanely irritating :p

If you like female fronted rock you should check out Jakalope. Kind of an industrial rock music with female vocals. They've just changed singers but the first two albums are really good.

Good singer but poor overal package. Don't have a great deal of standout songs.

They supported Maiden when I went to see them last year, and they didn't sound that bad live :) Certainly the best support act that night...

Ugh, mentioning Tori and Amy Lee in the same sentence is tantamount to heresy! Tori really is a true musical genius, whereas Amy Lee is just some bint who had singing lessons and joined a nu metal band.

It's fine if you like Evanesence (although I cannot see why!) but all this drooling and praise lauded over Amy Lee is very much undeserved as far as I'm concerned. :)

Saw Evanescence at Download Festival 2007, Certainly has a powerful voice, Enjoyed the performance but I don't think they should have been on as long as they were.

My wife bought me "The Open Door" today and I'm liking it. Refreshling different sound. I heard they supported Metallica recently?

I am, quite frankly, shocked to see this here. I help run a label for female-fronted metal bands so it's safe to say that this kind of thing is right up my street but I didn't expect to see Spie into this kind of stuff.

Funnily enough, Evanescence never used to sound the way they do now. Their first album, Origin, was very different but when Sony came along they changed the band's sound in a big - and lucrative - way.

If you like The Open Door I would recommend the following albums.

Within Temptation - The Heart of Everything
Lacuna Coil - Comalies
Nightwish - Once

Those bands are known as 'the big three' in this area.

I could go on but that'll do for now.

I find it strange how many people compare Evanescence to Lacuna Coil considering Lacuna Coil throughout most of it's career was very average man fronted band with brilliant but rare female "add-on" repertoir. With Lacuna Coil album to album you always get this odd, unbearable hybrid of up to half album being pretty solid female lead americanized soft gothic/nu metal and half album of depechemodesque nineties euro tin foil metal that sounds like a bad tribute to late Paradise Lost. In terms of consistency, it's like going to Firefly concert and ending up at McFly concert half the time (for those not in touch with their iTunes account - it's like going to Guano Apes concert and ending up at The Monkees).

To be fair Origin wasn't a bad album, Whisper is/was a fun track and My Immortal is probably one of thier most known, but yes it was less commercial, Fallen was really the breakthrough album.
I think Lysander has mentioned the most accessible albums from these other groups (not a bad thing!), as I mentioned earlier though, I'd probably recommend Dark Passion Play as an easy access to Nightwish instead, as Annette can be a little easier to follow than Tarja, Once is probably my favourite old Nightwish album though; and the older Over the Hills and Far Away is an epic track.

Was never quite so fond of Lacuna Coil as these other 3 though strangely.

@Mattey01

I also saw them, but was dissapointed. The performance lacked the energy you can see in some of thier older videos; not to mention the performance lacked heavily from the loss of Moody - they played a lot of songs that usually used his backing vocals, so the songs felt empty without them, as they didn't use recorded versions.
I was about 6 rows of people from the front, and as Im fairly tall I had a pretty clear view of everything, got some portable camera pics somewhere!

Sticking strictly to better female vocalists rather than just better bands as that would be like shooting fish in a barrel:

Bjork
Joanna Newsom
Regina Spektor
Feist
Cat Power
Beth Gibbons (of Portishead fame)
That one out of Nightwish has a better voice
Inara George (out of The Bird And The Bee)
Any jazz/soul singer i.e. Etta James, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone etc
Emma Lee (from Rosa)

I could go on....it's not exactly hard.

Well after listening to "My Immortal" again I can safely say you must be nuts to think Bjork is better or even in the same league! :P

My Immortal is such drip-fed emotion though. I much prefer the subtle yet incredibly powerful tones of "All is full of love"...

For Bjorks contribution to creating original music, she is by far the better musician.
