Eve Incarna - Should I bother?

I played a 21 day trial recently (it ended about 10 days ago or so), and there were about 29,000 people on it pretty much every time I logged on.

The game wasn't to my liking, unfortunately. It was just a little too slow, and I already have a huge backlog of games, so decided not to play it any further.

I went back to it briefly, found a 0.0 corp but after a 3 year absence I just couldn't get back into it.

Not a hater, played in Beta and when it 1st came out I can't think of a game I've ever enjoyed more, but now the shine seems to have worn off it and it just seems bland.:(

The truth is that since Incarna subsciption numbers have levelled out (rather than increasing slowly as before). The main reason was due to lack of attention from the devs on Spaceships. Instead the dev time has been put into in-station avatar stuff which is why the community has been in uproar. The general feeling is that they are using Eve as a testing bed for their other games they are working on. Recently the CCP CO released an apology and stated the main focus will now be back on Spaceships with the first updated coming this winter. Most of the community is in a 'wait and see' mode with half not cancelling just yet and the other half not re-subscribing till they see improvements.
On a personal level, I was done with Eve a few months ago. Then I got the come-back offer and gave it another chance and changing my approach. This is where Eve shines, the diversity of things to do. I'd tried Wormhole life and Factional Warfare life and neither appealed to me. Missioning is boring, but a means to an end, so I tried Incursions and I'm quite enjoying it. Again it's a mean to an end, but has put some direction back into the game for me and the ISK income to fulfill some long term goals.
It's not a game you can just 'try out' though. Scratching the surface of this game doesn't really show you much. It's very much a niche product.

Server population is still at a constant 40,000+. Plenty of people playing.. The idea that 'lots are quitting' is simply not true, if I remember right the server actually hit peak numbers fairly recently. Its one of the best MMO's ever made, by a long shot.

Sadly I can't play it at the moment due to being on a rubbish laptop, but I still keep my accounts ticking over and training.. Can't wait till I can login again properly.

Yeah there is so much you can do, i.e. recently I was introduced to hot dropping (low sec covert only) :D which is way too much fun.

When I started playing in 2009 the peak player load topped out about 29,000 most days, maybe 35,000 on the weekend. (Obviously about 1/3rd of these are alt accounts). Nowadys I see 20+,000 load after downtime and peak is about 40-42,000 most days and seen it almost hit 60,000 some weekends so the game definitely isn't dieing... however I would say there has probably been a big shift in those numbers whereas in 2009 lets say 75% were active accounts people actually interacting with the game, I'd say thats down to 50-60% now and a huge number of accounts are just bots, industry alt accounts or just people logging in to maintain training queues and actual ratio of people actually engaged with the game is down, possibly even below 2009 standards for actual player numbers rather than percentage/ratio.

I know a lot of people who maintain accounts but are holding off putting real playing time into the game until they see the devs refocus on the core game and sort things out - I don't think the number of people actually quitting is any different to the last 3-4 years but I do think if they don't turn things around soon there will be a momentum in people leaving eve.
