On the wagon, sorta
Ok ive never been one for MMORPG's and the idea of loosing my life one day at a time to wow never appealed atall. I have howeve allways fancied the IDEA of eve but never really looked into it any further.
Now i find myself at a loose end going through one of those points in your life we all go through where games dont really seem to be holding my attention very much.
Got MW2, Dirt2 even tryed getting into SC4 again but alass after 6 hours cultivating my city into a prosperous town with all a tennant could need a unannounced crash with no save blew the wind clean out of my sails :(
i jumped onto the forums and in the high res thread i noticed a snap of eve and ive decided to delve deaper.

Ive heard that it takes a while to get into, is this a problem for me the mood imm in at the moment? also what sort of gameplay is there, i know its a space orientated game but how much of it focuses in the ship and how much docked on foot if any atall.
lastly just some feedback on users thoughts about the game would be nice if possible :)

cheers in advance for taking the time to reply.

Have you had a flick through the official Eve Online site? That would give you a good idea of what it's all about. There is also a free trial (21 days through Steam) but in my opinion the trials aren't really long enough to show you what the games all about.

It's true that it can take a while to get into the game but it all depends on what you want to do. A new player can get in game and start doing some low sec PVP within 2 days, however if you want to start manufacturing and make some profit it's going to take you a good few months to start doing properly.

I'm sure some others can shed some more light on the game. It all depends on what your looking to get from the experience I suppose. My top two tips would be:
a) Get into a corp (OcUK has one I believe)
b) Once the trial expires give it another 4/5 weeks. You'll have to pay but I think it'll give you a much better chance at learning what it's all about.

Eve is that diverse that if you really wanted to you could sit in a station and buy items low and sell high to make money. It's not all ship based :p.

looking into it the game is colossal, how soon should you be looking into joining a corp, i mean like streight away or after your familier with the game.

5 minutes untill its downloaded

I played it for 4 years, 2 accounts and it was great, hi sec pirating in frigs was probably some of the most fun i've had.

However, I finally decided that it was more work than real life, it just became a constant grind to make money. There are far too many rubbish players/corps/alliances that you have to shift through to find a decent one.

I'd suggest you definitely try it, but unless you are prepared to put a lot of time in you won't enjoy the game to its fullest potential.

Play the tutorial all the way through is a must. Then join the OCUK corp, very newbie friendly. then after a couple of months you may feel ready to move on. :)

Eve is very good but it'll take a while for you to get to grips with it fully, it's an incredibly complex game but you do have to put a lot in to get anything out.

It's like playing a very very very pretty version of excel.

Definitely worth a go if you have lots of time on your hands, otherwise you might want something a bit lighter.

I played it for a bit, seven months or so of mining cured me of it. Its not really like the other mmos at all. Its almost a requirement to play windowed whilst mining. And yet it containers real rush's when you go into low sec, and through gate camps with your hard earned stuff.

Eve is a game that _sounds_ great to play... but when it comes down to it it can so fiddly and grindy that its not much fun...

You never really feel that immersed in the visual/physical aspect imo as its hard to really find a perspective of where you sit in the wider world and most of the missions and gameplay mechanics feel disconnected and disjointed.

Theres 2 sides to the game as well - one of which makes it fairly open ended - theres the constant economy which is just a pretty face on essentially a real time spreadsheet... then theres a bit of combat - which mostly comes down to a mixture of how well you've worked the figures and a bit of luck.

Much of the game revolves around training skills - which happens in the background and continues when your offline. Skill in choosing what skills you need and what order to train them will make a big difference in how much you enjoy the game.

Also its quite frustrating in that some things you can only really learn the hardway - some of the core concepts to the game you can't really grasp until you've messed up and probably lost your ship, implants and 3/4 of your ISK... at which point you will probably put the game down atleast temporarily - as an example its not that easy for a new player to pick up on the fact that the gallente race ships are best suited to armor tanking drone carriers with hybrid weapons... and you might waste time and money trying to learn shield boosting and laser weapons before you work it out.

I was fortunate in that a friend gifted me 35million ISK to start off so I could learn from some of the setbacks without being too frustrated by it - otherwise I'd have put it down in the first 3 days and never gone back.

If you have a good head for figures then dive in - if you just like the idea of space exploration and combat with a bit of light trading, etc. then IMO move on find something more arcadey.

Things that will make the game a bit more bareable:

In the map settings learn how to color the stars by systems you've visited and agents available to you - as it will enable you to work out where you are in the bigger picture a bit better.

Keep an eye on the colored dots by the waypoints (even if safe routing is set on) when you've set a destination - especially if you use auto-pilot so you don't accidentally jump into low sec.

Instead of using autopilot - select the next waypoint manually and jump to 0km.

Learn how to use the assets and people/places agents windows from the left hand menu to locate people and where your items are.

Try to work on builds that don't require implants - atleast early on - so that if your pod is killed you don't lose a lot of time and effort.

Until you've got to grips with the game don't fly around in the best ship and equipment you can buy - its a lot less frustrating to lose a tricked out T1 frigate with the money in the bank to build and equip another, than spend everything on the best ship and equipment you can only to get ganked 2 minutes later.

right click->show info on EVERYTHING and take note of the pre-requisites.

I downloaded the trial yesterday and go to grips with the game quite easily (General economics and merchanting in other games was helpful). I haven't finished the tutorial yet as I felt I had enough general knowledge of markets and basic MMO play. I suggest doing the tutorial anyway if you don't fancy reading the Evewiki or watching how things work like I do.

I bought my first destroyer (Catalyst) after 10 hours play and had nearly accumilated the money to buy a Thorax this morning. Was warping/stargating to a station to buy the Galante Cruiser skill at a good price when my GPU died :( Won't be playing again for a few days.

It is quite a slow game. I spent the majority of my time warping to stations and stargates to buy/ sell items. While there I would go pirate hunting in the nearest asteroid belt too. So if taking your time to achieve things is for you, then I suggest this game. I find myself browsing/reading while playing the game as travelling times can be quite long between star systems/stations.

Catalyst is good fun, people tend to write them off for anything other than salvaging but I find with a bit of creative thinking and making good use of the turret hardpoints you can make some quite good builds with it :D

I've tried like my 8th activation and it's the same every time, fly around solo, shoot stuff, rinse repeat.

Try join a corp that offers weekly activities, nothing happens.

I'm sure it's a good game, Im still playing to give it a chance but Im beggining to think all the good stuff that happens is make believe, or scripted events/planned video capturing sessions to draw players in.. ;) (j/k)

Joining a new corp tonight, we'll see...Looking to do pvp in something easy like a frigate, then maybe I'll finally see the point snce the game came out. Mining can go shove off, I want pvp.

let me know how itworks out will ya m8 ? my ign is Helikeon.

my friend and I joined an alliance 2 weeks ago - usual spiel.. sounded great.

we get there and the 'addendums' started to appear. you cant rat / plex / do anything in any system with a station.

then dominion hits. the small alliance my corp is in, now has sov in 3 systems, so now the entire region except for these 3 systems is a no-no; except of course we still have to pitch in and defend.

the authorities say 'just go venal' its npc so anyone can go there .. hmmm so why am i here again ??

the pvp ops are very frustrating, im so not the best pvper in the world but sheesh i just wish i had never joined them, bar 1 we did in ec-p8r has been such a fail cascade it beggars belief lol.

so now im looking longingly at the recruitment forum section again, thinking 'yayy another corp on the ol employment history' another corp that promises fun but delivers poop :(

still, paid up until december 19th so we will see ...

i think its worth anyones time to try it, just be prepared to work at finding a good fit for your interests, as most corps just lie regarding what they are really like.

started a few weeks back but got the money and just doing learning skills atm , if your playing long time best doing them will save you a lot of time in the long run

avoid like the plague, its a terrible game, i'd go for darkfall if you really want a 'brutal' world, if you just want an mmo then go for lotro

EVE is the greatest mmo ever and I spent some 4-5 years having great fun. To get the most out of it you do need to be in a decent Corp imo.

PvP is where the games at with real risk vs reward that you don't really see in most other mmo's.

Low sec is the best, if you can get yourself into a PvP corp and you get the best of both worlds, exploration for juicy ISK, I made 850 million off a 30 minute escalation site and get all the PvP I want with some good players.
