I've known about this since its inception, and always been faintly curious aboutit; however, it was recently reading about Istvaan Shogaatsu, the crime-lord who stole 20 billion ISK, that prompted me to look at it in more detail. I found myself intrigued by any game where such a diverse realm of things are possible, with its own player-led corporations, gangs and radio station, and by a universe so big and so rich that, floating somewhere in a distant galaxy, there's a black monolith that nobody's discovered yet. :D

Anyway, I'm up for giving it a go!

Anyone still playing, or played in the past, who's got any helpful advice for a n00b? Is it worth starting from the ground-up now, or is the game already too far advanced to warrant the attention? What things should I keep in mind while playing? What traps do typical new players often fall for, and what mistakes should I avoid?

theres a monolith in the system called "dead end" by one of the moons if thats what you mean
well worth a play!

the latest expansion made it so new characters start out with around 800,000 skill points, compared to the normal 30-100k that ppl started out with before, so new players can start of rather well, compared to what older players had to start with anyway.

there are several things to do when you start eve, READ the forums, they are very helpfull, they will teach you how to spec your character at the start, what skills to learn etc...

and once the character is made, DO the tutorial, eve is complicated and overwhelming for new players so make sure you follow the tutorial.

Additionally if you fancy trying something similar to EVE but totally offline (SP Only) but just as big try picking up X3 Reunion.

Yea, I still play, I have been for 2 years 7 months now. Great game, the best I've ever played by some margin. I highly recommend you give it a look, and give the game a good chance as-well as it may seem rather over complicated at first, but you soon get to grips with it. Besides you can come to terms with Eve at your own pace, you don't have to understand everything immediately to enjoy it :)

Good luck, and maybe I'll see you in space some day.
