After answering another post about this - I remember a few years back - it was quite easy damage a PC dew do static.

However these days I dont know of anyone that killed a PC with static! Are PC components now days more hardy or are we all more carefull - Has anyone recenly killed a PC by static?

I don't think components have become more resistant still made of silicon etc

Just more careful I think, basic precautions can prevent major damage. :p

I've build dozens of pcs over the last few years & have never had static problems

As long as you use common sense,no problem at all

I once took my 1998 Arsenal top off which was charged with static, touched me pc & it crashed. (nf7-s rev 2 mobo)
Never b0rked anything although i did **** my pants at first lol.

I build my PC's on the living room carpet and have never had any problems, all I do is sometimes touch the power supply.

I certainly would'nt be building on the living room carpet  Would just increase the chances of shorting something ;)

If it works for you, then who am i to argue :p

I've built hundreds of computers - never wear a static strap & haven't damaged a single one to static.

There's an article in a magazine/on a website recently where they tried to destrop various things by static & weren't able to.

I must have handled hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of server and workstation hardware components at work and Ive never damaged, or seen someone else damage any hardware from static.

Nope, never killed anything either, although I remember at work I once removed a Printers NIC and it was really really dusty. So after pulling the main tray out and then going for the card I did get a shock. Even heard it as well. Tested the printer and it worked fine. :p

My first ever upgrade of a motherboard (1995).... killed the old one with static. Well, I was stupid. I just slung the old board on the nearest surface - a bean bag seat!! :D LOL!!

Though it is a useful trick... I once had a client was wanted me to "make sure" that their motherboard was dead before he RMA'd it. So a few minutes inside that bean bag seat helped make sure....

I have also cleared the flash RAM in a printer network card. Saw the spark jump as I took it from someone's hand. Though we reflashed it without trouble. :D
