*rose tinted specs alert*

That retro console thread the other day got me thinking of the old days. Sure the graphics are considered lousy now but there was no problems wondering which television you needed for the best picture. Or which cables you had to buy.

No news about sales figures and whether your games machine was dead in the water already and you've wasted your money. No widespread news about bugs in games. No constant reports of consoles overheating / crashing / getting banned etc.

No Fifa 83/84/85/86/87.

The word "fanboy" didn't exist.

They were happy times. I miss them :)

Blame mass communication due to heightened media coverage which includes the internet and mobile phones; we're dependant on news and too much knowledge is not necessarily a good thing!

I remember when I bought my NES off my neighbour when he'd bought a SNES, I still thought it was the coolest thing around and was probably too young or too set on playing this nintendo that there could be anything better out there. :p

As has been said "fanboys" existed in the good ole days!! Cant remember how many times there was a speccys are better than C64 or laughing at the kids with a BBC as they were Educational Computers (until elite came along and we all wanted one). Difference is now is that instead of the playground people use internet forums to force there own biased opinons so it is much more widespread.
It was far simpler then but i can remember hearing a heated discussion on what was the best make of tape player for loading your speccy games on! :D
Just think now people think they need to justify there purchases and that they are right and if you disagree your a fanboy!

Yup, fanboys have existed since the dawn of gaming.

Just substitute "internet forum" for "school playground". :)

Personally, I prefer gaming these days. There are some timeless and stunning retro games but most have aged badly. Give me Pro Evo over Kick Off any day of the week.

i used to be a sega "fanboy" i cant beleive how daft i was all they years ago.

mastersystem 2 v nes snes v megadrive saturn v n64 and ps1

i used to be a tard tho only console not in my house from what i mentioned is the n64 since every time i saw one running my eyes couldnt handle the ultra blur graphics :P

ffs me and another guy on the bus both saturn owners used to argue about saturn been better than pc's but im 23 now an realise how daft they stupid arguements were :P

There were always fanboy arguments over the Amiga 500 and Atari ST back in the day :D. Amiga was the best though ;).

Yeah lol.

Now it retrospect, I can (still) say, with some authority... that the Amiga WAS better than the ST ;)

And I couldn't give a carp if it had midi built in, and that carp bands in the 80's used to have them on stage in Top of the Pops! ;)

I miss the whole 8/16 bit eras, I think i've owned most of the consoles from back then except the master system, never had one of those. I think the best memories have to be the Amiga 600 (eww the 500 was big and ugh and I had extra ram lol) and the SNES, fzero and Super mario world blew me away. I had a bit of a retro resurgance a couple of years ago, playing moonstone and speedball. :D

I miss them, but, I miss the N64 too, the whole GC/XBOX/PS2 generation failed to impress me, except halo and some games on the DC, the DC died too early for me :(

But the 360 is entertaining me non stop now :)

One thing I've learnt some games I love on the Master System are still great. Others which I used to like back in the day completely suck.

Yeah, you've really gotta watch out for those rose tinted specs sometimes ;)

Every now and then I get the urge to play some old favourite C64 games, and when I see them, I think "NO WAY" it could never have looked like that?

In my memory, C64 graphics were like the Amiga, and the Amiga was like... I dunno, better as well ;)

Still, a few weeks ago I had a blast on the old Amiga, a few favourites... really enjoyed a game of Apidya.

btw. not that I mean to knock the C64, I loved it to death, and I do still enjoy having a retro blast on it now and then... though granted, not that often ;) but it always comes as a bit of a shock when I load games, which I remember as having the "wow" factor graphically, and being amazed how far we've come. Hawkeye is one. I always enjoy a quick blast on Delta and Armalyte though.. in fact, any of the Thalamus games... and anything with a soundtrack by the famous Rob Hubbard! Anyone remember the Arcade Classics, and Skate or Die soundtracks?

We had all of that right up until the Xbox 360 came out.

Had an Amstrad CPC. That machine was a joy to own.

But as far as I can remember everyone used to compare screens between CPC, Speccy, C64 a lot. When the bigger machines flooded the market (Amiga, ST) suddenly you knew it wouldn't be long before your 8bit would be old news. I do remember the ST/Amiga bitching being quite common. I had a mate with an ST and he would go on and on about how it was better than the Amiga for various reasons - then he switched to the Amiga and never said anything about the ST anymore. From what I remember about the ST (never owned it myself) it was a good system.

In terms of my own computing glory days of old, my days as a kid with the CPC are up there at the top. Maybe a lot of my fundamental thoughts on gaming go back to that point. Maybe it's because I could spend virtually all my time learning games and the machine with no hassles. After that I'd put the Amiga up there. That machine was just from a different galaxy, ahead of its time and pushed a new era of graphics and sound on us, many many great games on that thing.

I had Both ST and Amiga, both had there plus points Midi was a plus point for me on the ST, I even had a program that used my Yamaha Keyboard for the Password for some of my stuff. I still play games such as xenon and xenon 2 and Blood Money, nice simple shoot em ups.

Going into your mates house on a rainy day, firing up the PS2 and trying to clock Medal of Honour, taking turns to play when somebody died :D The atmosphere was tense and everybody gathered around staring at a 15" TV set shouting at the screen every time an enemy came into view, those were the days
