Just to the left of my PC
I recently paid someone to assemble a new PC because I couldn't be bothered to do it myself. I'll just have to move the graphics cards and drives over from this PC when I finally get around to it. They did a fine job of cable tidying. The problem was with the design of the SATA power cable(s) from the PSU. Those cables are quite stiff and have the connectors embedded in the cable at right angles to the cable, designed specifically for the traditional setup of drives mounted horizontally in drive bays stacked vertically. But I'd be mounting the drives (SATA SSDs) vertically in mounting brackets that are side by side horizontally, sandwiched between the side panel and the plate that the back of the motherboard is mounted too. It's impossible to use 1 cable for those 3 drives and probably impossible to use 3 cables (the PSU comes with 4, modular) because there wouldn't be enough space to fit the resulting 14 (2 cables with 4 each and 2 cables with 3 each) rather bulky connectors in the space between the motherboard mounting plate and the side panel.

OK...I have some SATA power extension cables amongst the many bits and bobs of PC hardware I have in my "parts I might need some day" cupboard. Most of which are ridiculously obsolete now. Why do I keep 3 sets of floppy disc drive cables?

So...problem solved. I can run the a bulky 4-connector SATA power cable from the PSU along the bottom of the case and use 3 extension cables from it to power the drives. One connector at each end of the cable, so they take up much less space.

No, I can't. The extension cables aren't long enough to reach from the bottom of the case and up to the top of the drives with enough slack to loop back down to plug into the drives without too much bending. Maybe I'll have to undo the neat cable tidying, fit the optional drive bays from the case's accessories package and then they'll fit. Or maybe I'll have to buy longer extension cables. Faff and bother.

Then I realised that SSD's don't have a strict "this way up and only this way up!" construction. I could simply mount them with the connectors at the bottom and the cabling will reach just fine, no problem. I have no idea why I didn't realise that immediately as it's so obvious. Definitely a numpty moment.

How about spending over £1500 on an early upgrade from a 5950x to a 7950x and new MB and RAM etc... Because the machine wouldnt boot after an update... Doing all sorts of weird things...After all that someone posted that it may actually be the CMOS battery dying......... Ooops... Still not checked it though... All that stuff is in a box now.......

TBH I'm wondering why you mounted them that way up in the first place!

So am I!

Although I didn't get as far as actually mounting them. I was just sizing things up, making sure they would fit, before moving them from this PC to my new PC. They're still in this PC, my old PC. One day I'll get around to moving them over. For now, my new PC is just decoration.

EDIT: Now I think about it, I realise why I was thinking in terms of mounting them that way. The cable tidying that the person who built the PC for me had the SATA data cables dangling ready at the top of the SSD mounting trays and that's probably what locked me into thinking about the drives being that way up. But I just had to take them out of the topmost cable tidying velcro strap and they're fine for tidily reaching the bottoms of the SSD mounting trays.

I know that feeling - I've 3x shoe box sized boxes of just old cables like FDD, dozens of PS/2/USB and DVI/HDMI converters, etc. I just keep in case I need some day :(

To be fair though sometimes a good source of bits of wire, etc. for projects I do.

felt a bit of a novice when my 64gb C drive was constantly full or near full.
i was looking for the culprit and just could not find what was hogging all the space.

it turns i had been living with this massive space hog on my computers for many many years.

this parasite is called a hibernation file, i got rid of it and low and behold my C drive is now half empty.

i cant believe i had this on my computers for so long, i never use hibernate so it was totally wasted space for so long

Snap.

I have a boat load of cables adapters and the like. Damn I even hold on to Sli and crossfire connectors. I mean why?!? That's not even a thing anymore.

Can't let any of it go though, I may need some of it.... :)
