So this subject been on my mind a lot lately. Now, I *should* be happy with my life situation at the moment, I've got a decent, well paying job and bought my first property last year.

From the job front, I'm not completely at ease with it at the moment due to the fact we're migrating our IT infrastructure with our parent company, therefore some of my responsibilities may go...

On the property front I've had some major ups and downs, mainly involving downstairs neighbours and noise levels (have addressed the situation a number of times), this has made me regret getting a flat and possibly a small house would have been more ideal.

One thing that keeps circling round in my mind was about a year and a half ago I applied for a job in my favourite city in England - York, without any optimism of getting it, however I was offered the position. At the time however I was going through a bad breakup, and decided to remain in my hometown with friends and family; I was convinced that packing bags and relocating to a new area whilst in that frame of mind was a bad idea.

I sometimes look back and wish i'd had gone for it. But on the flip side with the way the world is at the moment (economy, jobs, etc) I should be damn thankful to have a decent job. So my question to GD is - Have you been in a similar situation> I.E just wanted to pack bags and relocate, just to get yourself out of a rut, or just fancied a fresh start?

I think we all go through these kind of feelings to differing degrees during our life. I've never wanted to pack bags and relocate to get away from things (I did it to get towards things) but we all find ourselves in a rut at some stage I think. How you deal with it is the important part.

I'm in a job where I can do that very easily if I want to. The problem is, I'm a stubborn bugger and I don't even know what I want at the best of times anyway so it's kinda wasted on me.

Ah well.

i done it, and have never looked back

life is way to short to wonder, 'what if'

go for it, you can only go back if it doesnt work, but at least you know you failed, rather than wondering if it would work or not.

and if it fails, move somewhere new again, you can only grow and mature in the process

Personally, no. I'm in a better position that a significant proportion of people in the world I expect, and any foibles that come my way I'll deal with as challenges. The glamour of a "fresh start" to me only has appeal if you either have nothing to lose, or have a big enough safety net to not care.

That said, if I was in either of those two scenarios, would I be tempted to try something to see "what if"? Probably!

Currently planning my escape route out of England - America, Australia or perhaps Japan.

A fresh start is what I'm seeking, though an adventure is more of an apt name.

Stop wondering what if, and take action.

How are you feeling? you want change, ok how can you get change. Is it in your power to obtain it, if not well nothing you can do just ride it out accept your feelings. If answer is yes option is to take action to achieve that change, start looking at ways to go about it and do it!

Start saying "yes" aswell, to any new experience new changes, best advice I got was just say yes.

Helps you avoid what ifs in life.

My number one dream in life has always been to be able to start it all over again fully possessing the knowledge I currently have from the first day of existence.

I'll go back to dreaming and sulking in a corner somewhere.

I packed in a good job and moved countries when the wife said she missed her family. I guess if you dont take a risk on such things you'll never know what might have been.

I quit everything to completely change my life around. Took some time to adjust but now I think it is the best move I have ever made and I know by my goals I am doing excellently. Not what everyone would want what I do I am sure but that is why before making such a move you need to be really clear on your priorities and then do whatever you need to in their attainment.

I'm feeling generally OK, but could be happier. The things that are stopping me is jobs which even though there's a lack of at the moment, even more so in my area (IT) in York. Plus if I wanted to move I'd have to sell the flat first so it wouldn't exactly be a quick transition.

It's a lot easier to do it with someone else though.

I've just made quite a big decision. I think it's the right one, but it's still pretty worrying. Meh, I'll never know what could have been if I went the other route so I suppose I won't miss anything.
One chapter has been firmly closed, time to open another one.

Yes, almost every day I wonder why on earth did I not pursue either a career as a pilot or air traffic control. I think the answer is that I couldn't afford flight training, and no job prospects in NI for ATCOs so I'm stuck in IT and it really can be a grind despite being on decent money. I think I have no option to change now as recently married, can't relocate and wouldn't give up 9-5 hours for the crappy hours that aviation jobs would have. Having worsening eyesight doesn't help my chances either. IT is seriously boring although hopefully a new job might work out soon.
